Office Chair Backward Adjustment
Admin October 08, 2026
The methods for adjusting an office chair backward vary depending on the model, and specific operations should be carried out in combination with the type of chair.

I. Basic Adjustment Steps
- Unlock the Recline Function
The adjustment handle of most office chairs is located on the right side of the seat (a few on the left). It could be a lever, knob, or pull rod. Sit up straight and gently pull the handle. You will hear a 'click' sound, indicating that the locked state has been released. If the chair is equipped with an independent recline lock (such as some high-end models), you need to first pull up the locking switch under the seat. - Adjust the Recline Angle
Slowly lean your body backward while continuously pulling the handle. The backrest will gradually recline with the pressure. Release the handle when you reach a comfortable angle, and it will automatically lock.
- Mechanical Knob Type: Rotate the knob at the base (usually marked with arrow directions) to control the resistance. You need to manually test the tightness, which is suitable for traditional office chairs.
- Gas Cylinder Linkage Type: When reclining, gently push the seat in the direction of the backrest to activate the cushioning function. High-end models support synchronous adjustment of the armrests (such as the one-click synchronous design of the Sihoo M1).
- Smart Touch Type: Set the angle through the buttons on the backrest or an app. Some models can remember commonly used preferences.
- Return to the Upright Position
Pull the handle or knob again, and the backrest will bounce back to the initial position with the assistance of the gas device. For the gas cylinder linkage type, you can also assist the reset by shifting your body's center of gravity forward.
II. Other Adjustment Methods
- Handle-Type Adjustment
Find the adjustment handle on the right side of the seat. Pull it and lean your back slightly backward. Release the handle to fix the angle. To return to the upright position, pull the handle again and relax your back, and the backrest will automatically bounce back. - Bottom Adjuster Operation
Find the adjuster under the chair (usually a pull rod or knob). Pull up the adjuster while applying force to your back. Release the adjuster to lock it when you reach the desired tilt.
III. Precautions
- Operation Safety
Avoid sudden force when reclining to prevent the gas cylinder from losing control. Regularly check whether the adjustment components are loose, especially the mechanical knobs. - Material Protection
Long-term large-angle reclining of leather seats may accelerate material aging. It is recommended to control the frequency of reclining. - Troubleshooting
If the chair frequently falls backward, check whether the gas cylinder is damaged (quality directly affects stability). If the spring is damaged, replace the support frame. For gas cylinders without safety certification, it is recommended to replace the chair to ensure safety.
