Office Chair Backrest Wobble
The wobbling of an office chair backrest can be troubleshot and repaired through the following steps:

1. Check if the core screws are loose
There are usually 3-4 hexagon socket screws at the connection between the backrest and the base. Tighten them one by one with the corresponding wrench, paying special attention to the concealed parts under the seat. If the screw holes are blackened or worn, it may be due to stripped threads. You can replace them with slightly thicker screws of the same specification or fill the holes with wood shavings to increase friction. For chairs from brands costing over a thousand yuan (such as Herman Miller and Okamura), it is recommended to contact after-sales service to obtain original screws to avoid damaging the stress structure of the chair body.
2. Adjust the recline tension knob
Some chairs are equipped with a recline tension adjustment knob at the junction of the base and the backrest. Long-term non-adjustment may lead to a decrease in the spring's elastic force. Rotating the knob clockwise can increase the resistance. If adjustment is ineffective, the built-in spring or the entire adjustment mechanism needs to be replaced. People weighing over 80 kilograms should pay special attention to the aging of the springs.
3. Check the gas lift and the five-star base
If the backrest wobbles along with the seat sinking, it indicates that the gas lift is aging or the connection between the five-star wheel base and the chair is worn. You can invert the chair and gently tap the gas lift with a rubber mallet to detach it from the base. When replacing, match the model (such as a diameter of 22mm or 25mm) and press down firmly after installation to test the stability. The steel-frame backrests of mainstream brands on the market (such as Sihoo and Okamura) are more than 30% more durable than plastic frames.
4. Targeted repair solutions
- Loose adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover plate of the base counterclockwise, expose the metal fixing frame, and then use a wrench to tighten 6-8 fixing screws symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force distribution.
- Spring detachment: Use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure its length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (costing about 5-15 yuan).
- Excessive clearance in the gas lift: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and rotate the black plastic adjustment knob counterclockwise. Test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ.
5. Emergency reinforcement techniques
If the screws are stripped and there are no spare parts, you can temporarily wrap the screw rods with electrical tape, use cable ties to fix the connection between the backrest and the armrests, or cut a 3cm-wide strip from a bicycle inner tube and wrap it around the joint. These methods are only for short-term emergency use. Long-term use still requires professional repair.
Daily maintenance advice: Check the screws every six months and regularly spray rust-removing lubricant on the adjustment mechanisms; check the tightness of the screws every quarter, and people with a larger body weight should shorten the inspection cycle of the gas lift; when purchasing, prioritize models with a three-position backrest locking function, which can reduce the probability of loosening.
