Office Chair Backrest Too Tight

Admin October 14, 2026

If the backrest of an office chair is too tight, it can be adjusted or improved with auxiliary measures to achieve a comfortable state. Here are the specific methods:

For Adjustable Office Chairs

The operation methods vary for office chairs with different adjustment mechanisms.

  • Knob-adjustable type: Usually, an adjustment knob can be found on the side or bottom of the office chair. Turn the knob counterclockwise, and the backrest will gradually loosen. At this point, you can lean against the backrest and, based on your own requirements for the backrest's firmness, tilt the backrest backward to the desired angle. During the adjustment process, you can try different tilt angles multiple times to find the most comfortable position for yourself.
  • Gas-lift-adjustable type: This type of office chair is generally equipped with an adjustment lever. Pull up the adjustment lever while coordinating your body movements, such as leaning backward or forward. The backrest will adjust accordingly with your body movements. When the backrest reaches a comfortable state, release the adjustment lever to fix the backrest position.
  • Handle-adjustable type: There will be an up-and-down moving handle on the side of the office chair. Move the handle up or down, and the backrest will change its angle accordingly. By continuously trying different directions and degrees of moving the handle, you can adjust the backrest to an appropriate firmness and tilt angle.

For Non-adjustable Chairs or Those Still Uncomfortable After Adjustment

Some low-priced office chairs may have design flaws, such as a lack of zoned support in the backrest. This can result in ineffective support for the waist, back, and other parts of the body when sitting, causing discomfort. For such situations, the following auxiliary improvement measures can be taken:

  • Add an adjustable lumbar pillow: Choose a suitable adjustable lumbar pillow and place it between the backrest of the office chair and your waist. By adjusting the position and height of the lumbar pillow, it can precisely support your waist, reduce waist pressure, and improve the comfort of sitting.
  • Adjust the backrest tilt angle: If the office chair has a certain range of tilt angle adjustment, even if it is not a dedicated adjustment method, you can try some physical methods, such as placing something under the bottom of the backrest, to fine-tune the tilt angle of the backrest. This will make your body feel more natural and comfortable when sitting.
