Office Chair Backrest Too Soft

Admin October 09, 2026

An office chair with a too-soft backrest can be improved through temporary support, filling adjustment, posture optimization, and seat replacement. Here are the specific methods:

1. Hard Material Support If the backrest material (such as sponge or mesh fabric) is too soft and causes sagging, you can cut a hardwood board or hard plastic board that matches the size of the backrest and fix it inside the backrest with glue or screws. This method can directly enhance the structural hardness, restore support for the spine, and avoid concentrated lumbar pressure caused by sagging. Note that the edges of the material should be polished smoothly to prevent skin scratches or damage to the chair surface.

2. Filling Thickening Adjustment According to the degree of backrest depression, choose high-density sponge blocks, polyester fiber cotton, or crushed foam particles as fillers. Sew the fillers into a cloth bag or directly paste them on the inner layer of the backrest to increase the thickness and elasticity of the backrest. Prioritize memory foam or latex materials, whose slow rebound properties can better fit the body curve and prevent the fillers from shifting. After filling, test the rebound speed of the backrest to ensure it provides support without affecting comfort.

3. Immediate Posture and Accessory Optimization

  • Lumbar Pillow Adjustment: Add an adjustable lumbar pillow with a thickness of 5-8 cm and place it at the L3-L5 lumbar segments (approximately the most depressed part of the waist). Fix it with Velcro or straps. The lumbar pillow should have forward/backward and up/down adjustment functions to adapt to different body types.
  • Backrest Inclination: Adjust the backrest to an inclination of 105ยฐ-110ยฐ and use a footrest or leg rest to keep the thighs parallel to the ground, dispersing leg pressure.
  • Regular Movement: Get up every 45 minutes for 1-2 minutes of stretching, focusing on the lumbar and back muscle groups (such as cat-cow pose and side bends) to avoid muscle stiffness caused by prolonged static loads.

4. Replacement with an Ergonomic Chair If the existing chair cannot be improved through adjustments, it is recommended to replace it with an ergonomic chair with the following functions:

  • Dynamic Support System: The backrest and seat cushion tilt in tandem to maintain the natural curvature of the spine.
  • Multi-Dimensional Adjustable Headrest: Supports height, angle, and forward/backward position adjustments to relieve cervical spine pressure.
  • Breathable Material: Choose mesh fabric or 3D breathable material to reduce stuffiness. When test-sitting, focus on testing: whether the gap between the waist and the backrest is less than a fist (about 5 cm) and whether there is no pressure on the shoulder and neck areas to ensure the chair can fully support the body.
