Office Chair Backrest Too Low

Admin October 17, 2026

The following methods can be used to solve the problem of an office chair backrest being too low:

1. Use a raised headrest
A raised headrest can increase the height of the backrest while supporting the neck and relieving cervical spine pressure. If there is a feeling of the neck being suspended in the air during initial use, a small pillow can be used as a transition. Such headrests usually adopt ergonomic designs, are compatible with most office chairs, and are easy to install and cost-effective.

2. Optimize lumbar support
Placing a lumbar pillow at the waist can fill the gap between the waist and the chair back, disperse lumbar spine pressure, and prevent lumbar muscle strain. It is recommended to choose memory foam or high-elasticity sponge materials for the lumbar pillow to fit the physiological curvature of the spine. Note that the height of the lumbar pillow should be aligned with the position of the 3rd to 5th lumbar vertebrae to avoid secondary fatigue caused by being too high or too low.

3. Install a backrest pad

  • Finished raised pad: It can be directly fixed to the original chair back and achieve stable installation through adjustable straps, seat belts, or ISOFIX interfaces. Such products usually use high-elasticity sponge for the inner layer and breathable mesh fabric for the outer layer, providing both support and breathability. The thickened waist design can prevent the body from sliding down. Before purchasing, measure the width of the chair back and the length of the straps to ensure compatibility.
  • DIY homemade raised pad: Cut two pieces of fabric of the same size from cotton or canvas (leave a 2-centimeter seam allowance around the edges), sew three sides, and then fill with pearl cotton. The homemade pad can be adjusted in thickness and hardness according to personal needs, but pay attention to the sewing process to avoid the filling from being exposed.

4. Adjust the chair's built-in functions

  • Wire control system maintenance: If the wire control switch fails, check whether it is loose, broken, or disengaged, and restore the function by adjusting the position of the nut or replacing the wire control terminal.
  • Gas rod replacement: A gas rod without gas will cause the chair back to sink, and a class 4 gas rod (with safety certification) needs to be replaced. When replacing, ensure that the size of the gas rod matches the chair.
  • Angle and support force adjustment: Common swivel chairs lock the backrest angle through a handle on the right side, and the rebound force can be adjusted by a knob on the chassis (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease).

5. Adjust sitting posture and chair height
Keep the upper body straight, place both feet flat on the ground, and keep a distance of 2-3 fingers' width between the knees and the front edge of the seat. The lumbar pillow should be directly opposite the lumbar spine, and the chair height should make the thighs parallel to the ground to avoid leg suspension or excessive pressure. Regularly adjusting the sitting posture can reduce fatigue caused by a single posture.
