Office Chair Backrest Too High

Admin October 12, 2026

An excessively high backrest on an office chair can have multiple adverse effects, primarily including restricting neck movement range, altering sitting posture mechanics, and affecting mobility convenience.

Firstly, restricting neck movement range is a relatively common issue. When people sit on an office chair with an overly high backrest, their bodies naturally lean back, causing the neck to tilt backward excessively. Maintaining this posture for a long time requires the neck muscles to continuously exert force to keep the head balanced, which can easily lead to neck muscle fatigue and soreness. Moreover, this unnatural posture increases the pressure on the cervical spine, causing uneven pressure distribution on the intervertebral discs. Over time, this can accelerate degenerative changes in the cervical spine and increase the risk of cervical spondylosis. For example, some office workers who use high-backrest office chairs for long periods often feel neck stiffness and pain. In severe cases, they may even experience dizziness and arm numbness, which are likely signs of adverse effects on the cervical spine.

Secondly, altering sitting posture mechanics is also not to be ignored. An excessively high backrest shifts the body's center of gravity backward, disrupting the normal sitting posture mechanics. In this situation, the waist unconsciously arches forward or bends to maintain body balance, resulting in the waist bearing unreasonable pressure. This abnormal pressure distribution keeps the waist muscles, ligaments, and other tissues in a tense state for a long time, which can easily trigger waist pain, lumbar muscle strain, and other issues. Especially for those who already have old waist injuries or weaker waist muscle strength, a high-backrest office chair may exacerbate their waist discomfort.

Finally, affecting mobility convenience is particularly evident in certain specific scenarios. In office settings that require frequent getting up and moving around, such as receiving clients or communicating with colleagues, an excessively high backrest can be an obstacle to getting up. People need to exert more effort to overcome the backrest's resistance when getting up, which not only increases the difficulty of getting up but may also lead to body imbalance due to improper force application, increasing the risk of accidents like falls.
