Office Chair Backrest Tilt

Admin October 16, 2026

The adjustment methods for the backrest tilt of office chairs vary depending on the chair type and design. Common adjustment mechanisms include lever adjustment systems, knob adjustment systems, and pneumatic adjustment systems, with specific operations as follows:

Lever Adjustment System
This is a common adjustment method for mid-range and high-end office chairs. First, locate the adjustment lever, usually positioned near the right or left side beneath the seat. If the chair has a recline lock feature, you need to release the lock first by gently pulling or pushing the lever. Then, lean your body weight backward while adjusting the lever to achieve a comfortable recline angle for the backrest. If the chair supports angle locking, after adjusting to the desired angle, pull or push the lever again to secure the position.

Knob Adjustment System
Often found in ergonomic chairs, this system controls the recline angle and tension via a knob. To locate the knob, check the area near the central support column beneath the seat. When adjusting the recline tension, turning the knob clockwise typically increases the backrest's recline resistance, suitable for heavier users or those preferring stable support; turning it counterclockwise reduces resistance, facilitating adjustments for lighter users or those needing flexible recline. Some chairs may have a separate knob for recline angle adjustment, in which case refer to the product manual for operation.

Pneumatic Adjustment System
Some modern office chairs utilize pneumatic technology, with the adjustment lever often integrated with the height adjustment lever. By pushing in different directions, you can smoothly adjust the recline angle. When using, gently pull the lever while leaning your body backward, and the backrest will move smoothly to the target angle. This design eliminates the need for repeated locking, providing a more fluid operation experience.

Special Adjustment Method for Executive Chairs
For executive chairs, locate the adjuster beneath the chair. When operating, pull the adjuster upward while continuously applying force to your back to tilt the backrest. Key Point: Before reaching the appropriate angle, maintain control of the adjuster with your hand and continue applying force to your back to prevent the angle from rebounding when released. Once the backrest is adjusted to the desired tilt, release the adjuster to secure the position.

Precautions:

  1. Before adjusting, confirm the chair type and design to avoid misoperation and damage.
  2. If the chair has a locking feature, ensure the angle is fixed after adjustment to prevent accidental movement during use.
  3. When adjusting with a knob, rotate it gradually and test the resistance to avoid over-adjustment, which may result in a backrest that is too loose or too tight.
  4. When adjusting the pneumatic system, operate gently to avoid damaging the gas cylinder with excessive force.
