Office Chair Backrest Tightening

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair backrest tightening can be achieved by identifying loose areas, implementing targeted repairs, emergency reinforcement, and locking the backrest in place.

Identifying Loose Areas

Test the degree of wobble when leaning the chair back. If there is a clicking sound, it is often due to loose adjustment rod screws; if the backrest lacks rebound force, it may be due to aging springs or gas cylinders. Once the root cause of the problem is identified, targeted repair measures can be taken.

Targeted Repair Solutions

  • Loose adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise. After exposing the metal bracket, use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one. It is recommended to operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force distribution, which could lead to screw slippage or backrest tilt.
  • Spring disengagement: Locate the spring bolt at the bottom of the backrest and use needle-nose pliers to re-engage the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure the original spring length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (price range: approximately 5-15 yuan) to avoid repair failure due to size mismatch.
  • Excessive gas cylinder clearance: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, locate the gas cylinder adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise to increase support force. During adjustment, it is recommended to test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ to avoid over-adjustment, which could damage the gas cylinder or prevent the backrest from rebounding.

Emergency Reinforcement Techniques

If professional tools are not available, temporary solutions can be implemented: Cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide strips and wrap them around the joint between the backrest and the base to increase friction; or use rubber bands to bind the movable joints of the gas cylinder to limit the range of motion. These measures can provide 3-7 days of stability but should only be used as temporary solutions. Long-term use still requires repairing loose components.

Locking the Backrest

To fix the backrest angle, follow these steps based on the chair type:

  • Knob type: Rotate the circular knob under the chair clockwise to increase backrest resistance until it is locked in place.
  • Lever type: Locate the lever on the side or under the chair and move it to the 'lock' position to secure the backrest.
  • Button type: Press the dedicated button on the chair to lock the backrest angle. After positioning yourself, press the button, lean back slightly, and listen for a clicking sound to confirm locking.
