Office Chair Backrest Tension

Admin October 09, 2026

The adjustment methods and troubleshooting for the tension of an office chair backrest depend on the type and design of the chair.

I. Normal Adjustment Methods

  1. Mid-range office chairs: Models with reclining adjustment functions usually have a toggle handle located beneath the seat or armrest. To adjust, first toggle the handle, then lean back with your back while adjusting the tilt angle and tension of the backrest according to your needs. Release the handle to lock it in place once adjusted to the desired position.
  2. High-end ergonomic chairs: Some models offer dedicated backrest tension adjustment devices, such as knobs or pull-out switches on the side of the backrest. By rotating the knob or pulling the switch, you can finely control the support force of the backrest to better fit the curve of your back and meet personalized needs.
  3. Basic office chairs: These usually have a fixed design, and the backrest tension cannot be adjusted. To improve comfort, you may need to replace the chair or add a cushion.

II. Troubleshooting for a Loose Backrest

  1. Loose adjustment rod screws: If the backrest wobbles or cannot be locked, the fixing screws at the base connection may be loose. Use a Phillips screwdriver and a wrench to tighten the screws to ensure a firm connection between the backrest and the base.
  2. Fatigued backrest springs: If the spring's locking position fails, the support force of the backrest will decrease. Use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is severely deformed, replace it with a new one.
  3. Aged gas lift: Excessive clearance in the gas lift can cause the backrest to sag or become loose. Rotate the adjustment knob of the gas lift counterclockwise to increase the internal support force. If adjustment is ineffective, replace the gas lift.

III. Precautions

  • Before adjusting, confirm the type of chair to avoid ineffective operations on basic office chairs.
  • When performing maintenance, disconnect the power supply (for electrically adjustable models) and use professional tools to prevent damage to components.
  • If the fault cannot be resolved by yourself, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional maintenance technician to ensure safety and functionality.
