Office Chair Backrest Stuck

Admin October 09, 2026

The stuck office chair backrest can be resolved through the following methods:

  1. Adjust the control lever
The backrest locking function of most office chairs is controlled by a lever beneath the seat. Locate this long metal lever (usually located at the center or side of the seat bottom), pull it out completely with force and keep it in the pulled-out state. The locking mechanism inside the backrest should be released, and the backrest will automatically rebound to the upright position under the action of the spring. After it is fully reset, push the lever back into the fixing hole to lock the current angle. If the chair is designed to unlock by pulling the handle to the right and lock by pushing it to the left, operate in that direction.

  2. Check and clean foreign objects
Move the chair to a stable floor and ensure there is enough space for operation around it. Focus on checking the pivot point at the bottom of the backrest and the junction between the seat and the chassis to see if there are any foreign objects such as cables, fabric fibers, or debris stuck in. Use tweezers or a soft-bristled brush to clean the foreign objects, and avoid using sharp tools to scratch the components. Foreign object blockage is a common cause of a stuck backrest, and it can usually be restored to normal movement after cleaning.

  3. Manually assist in resetting and check the spring tension
If the backrest still fails to rebound after pulling out the control lever, while keeping the control lever pulled out, use your hand to assist in pushing the backrest forward to the upright position, and at the same time, feel if there is any abnormal resistance during the resetting process. If the spring is completely weak (for example, there is no rebound feeling when pushing the backrest), the spring may be ineffective or broken, and the spring or the support frame needs to be replaced.

  4. Adjust the chassis components
The chassis of an ordinary office chair is usually equipped with a cylindrical knob for adjusting the rebound support force. Turning it clockwise increases the rebound force, and turning it counterclockwise decreases it. If the backrest rebounds too slowly or too quickly, adjust it to a comfortable state by rotating this knob.

  5. Special handling for reclining chairs
If the chair supports a reclining function, check whether the wire-controlled switch is closed. If the wire control is loose, broken, or disengaged, adjust the nut position, replace the wire control, or re-hook it accordingly; if the small gas rod is leaking (characterized by no elasticity when pressing the thin end), replace the gas rod.

  6. Replace components or contact for repair
If the spring is damaged, purchase a support frame of the same model for replacement; if the adjusting handle is stuck, try letting the chair recline and then reset and lock the handle, and then move the adjusting handle to adjust the angle. If the problem is still not resolved and the chair is within the warranty period, contact the merchant or manufacturer and request telephone guidance for repair or return it for repair (the cost is usually borne by the merchant).
