Office Chair Backrest Reupholstering
Reupholstering an office chair backrest involves five steps: preliminary preparation, disassembling the old leather, fitting the new leather, installing and securing it, and final adjustments. Here are the specific operations:

Preliminary Preparation: First, measure the dimensions of the backrest, including its length, width, curvature, and the width of the edge binding, to ensure the new leather fits properly. Prepare tools such as a utility knife, screwdriver, scissors, strong adhesive or specialized glue, a staple gun (or manual staples), sandpaper, and a clean cotton cloth. It is recommended to choose a durable, thickened leather that matches the overall color and style of the chair. If the backrest has an adjustment mechanism, observe its internal structure in advance to avoid damaging components during disassembly.
Disassembling the Old Leather:
- Use a screwdriver to pry open the edge staples or clips, or use a utility knife to cut the seams.
- For a fully enclosed backrest, first remove the base screws and lay the entire backrest flat.
- When stripping the old leather, pad it with a cotton cloth to prevent scratches. If there is residual glue, lightly sand it with sandpaper.
- Be careful not to scratch the base frame, especially metal or wooden parts, during operation.
Fitting the New Leather:
- Lay the new leather flat on the ground, place the old frame in the center, and align the edges, leaving a 2-3 cm margin for binding.
- Outline the shape with chalk and then cut it out, leaving extra margin at the curves for stretching and securing.
- If the backrest has a cushion, cut out a matching leather cover and leave a zipper position for easy cleaning.
- After cutting, check that the edges are smooth to avoid fraying affecting subsequent securing.
Installing and Securing the New Leather:
- Staple Gun Fixing: Start from the top center and staple every 5-8 cm to ensure the leather is evenly taut without wrinkles; adjust slowly when stretching the sides and fold and staple the corners firmly.
- Glue Fixing: Apply a thin layer of glue to the edges of the frame, press the leather down, and then press it with a heavy object for 1-2 hours to ensure a firm bond.
- Backrest Cover with Zipper: First insert the backrest cushion, then zip it up to secure it to the frame, ensuring the zipper runs smoothly.
- Be careful not to overstretch the leather during operation, causing deformation, especially at the curves.
Final Adjustments:
- Reinstall the backrest onto the chair body, check that the corners are secure, and gently shake to confirm there is no looseness.
- Wipe the leather surface with a damp cloth to remove glue marks and dust.
- If there are local wrinkles, adjust them by pulling with your hands or use a hot air blower on low heat to soften them and then re-secure them.
- Before repairing a genuine leather chair, test the color with a matching repair paste to ensure color consistency.
Precautions:
- Wear gloves throughout the operation to avoid cuts from tools or contact with glue.
- If the frame is damaged, repair it before reupholstering; otherwise, it will affect the lifespan of the new leather.
- For chairs with complex structures, it is recommended to take photos to record the disassembly steps for easier reassembly.
