Office Chair Backrest Replacement
Admin October 13, 2026
Replacing the backrest of an office chair involves four steps: preliminary preparation, removing the old backrest, installing the new backrest, and final adjustments. Here are the specific operations:

Preliminary Preparation
- Tool Preparation: Select tools such as screwdrivers (cross/flat), wrenches, plastic pry bars, and rubber mallets based on the chair's structure. If the chair has electric adjustment features, unplug the power source in advance.
- Fabric Selection: Choose materials like breathable mesh, leather (faux/genuine), or linen based on your needs. Measure the dimensions of the old backrest or match the replacement fabric according to the model.
- Safety Preparation: Clear the work area and lay down soft cloth or cardboard to protect the floor. Place small parts like screws and clips in a container in order to avoid losing them during disassembly.
Removing the Old Backrest
- Observe the Connection Method: Turn the chair upside down on a soft pad and inspect how the backrest is fixed to the seat body (with screws or clips).
- Screw Fixation: Use the corresponding screwdriver to turn counterclockwise and remove all fixed screws before separating the backrest from the body.
- Clip Fixation: Use a plastic pry bar to gently pry open the clip from the gap, avoiding breakage. If the clip is too tight, use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the connection to assist in loosening.
- Base Removal: If the base needs to be removed, use a rubber mallet to evenly tap around the bottom steel ring and then try to pry it open. Note: If the backrest has adjustment mechanisms (such as height or angle adjustment), inspect the internal structure first to avoid damaging components.
Installing the New Backrest
- Fabric Fixation:
- For fabric backrests, evenly apply a thin layer of glue along the edges, press to fit, and then press with a heavy object for 1-2 hours to secure.
- For backrest covers with zippers, first slip the cover onto the backrest cushion, then zip it up to secure it to the frame.
- Reassembly: Reinstall the part with the new backrest onto the chair body, check if the edges are secure, and gently shake to confirm there is no looseness. Special Handling: For genuine leather backrest repairs, it is recommended to use a leather repair paste of the same color series. Test a small area in advance to ensure color matching.
Final Adjustments
- Clean the Surface: Wipe off glue marks and dust on the backrest surface with a damp cloth.
- Adjust Flatness: If there are local wrinkles, gently pull by hand or use a hot air blower on low heat to soften and then refix to ensure a flat appearance.
Tip: The structures of different chair models vary greatly. It is recommended to refer to the instruction manual or consult professionals before operating to avoid damage caused by incorrect disassembly.
