Office Chair Backrest Repair Methods

Admin October 14, 2026

If the backrest of your office chair is loose, you can use the following repair methods depending on the situation:

Overall Loose Backrest

  • Check screws and connectors: Locate the screws connecting the backrest to the base, usually found beneath the seat or at the folding point of the backrest. Use a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench to tighten the screws clockwise. If the screw holes are stripped, you can fill them with toothpicks and apply wood glue, then re-tighten the screws after the glue dries. Alternatively, replace the screws with larger-diameter ones for a stronger hold.
  • Replace worn or broken parts: If the looseness is caused by aging plastic parts or broken metal parts, replace the corresponding components. First, remove the old connectors (such as rivets or L-shaped brackets), then install new original parts or upgraded metal connectors to ensure a secure connection. After installation, test the chair's load-bearing stability to prevent further loosening.

Inoperative Backrest Angle Adjustment

  • Check the locking mechanism: For chairs with a reclining function, check if the backrest is locked. Mainstream computer chairs use a lever control (a rod under the seat, pulling it down locks the backrest), while better ergonomic chairs use a cable control (the operation switch is integrated with the base). If the backrest is not locked, adjust it to the desired angle and re-lock it.
  • Replace damaged springs: If the backrest still cannot be locked, the mechanism springs on the base may be damaged. Contact the manufacturer to purchase compatible springs for replacement and restore the backrest angle adjustment function.
  • Adjust the tightness: Most office chairs have a circular knob or a toggle at the bottom to control the backrest tightness. Rotate the knob counterclockwise or push the toggle to the maximum resistance position, then sit back and test the tightness. Repeat the adjustment until it feels right.

Loose or Damaged Backrest Fabric

  • Re-attach or sew: If the backrest fabric is loose, use strong glue or double-sided tape to re-attach it to the backrest. If the damaged area is small, you can sew it with thread or use special repair tools for fixing.
  • Replace the backrest: If the backrest fabric is severely damaged, consider replacing it with a new one. Choose original or same-brand spare parts to ensure the size and shape match the original, avoiding installation incompatibility.

Additionally, you can use a triangular iron plate for reinforcement: Lay the chair down, place the triangular iron plate at the back and bottom of the chair, and secure it with wood screws to make the chair more stable. Ensure the chair is firmly fixed before operation. If metal welding is involved, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.
