Office Chair Backrest Repair

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair backrest repair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the specific type of fault. Common faults and repair steps are as follows:

1. Backrest cushion detachment due to cushion nut falling off
If the fault is caused by the nut on the cushion falling off, first use a hole opener to enlarge the original hole and clean up the remaining nut fragments. Then, select a No. 6 threaded rod and screw it into the hole. Insert a zip tie with four teeth into the tooth slot and fix the nut by adjusting the position of the zip tie. When the glue is almost dry, unscrew the threaded rod to complete the final fixation of the nut. Note: Before the glue is completely dry, use a screwdriver to repeatedly twist the threaded rod to prevent it from sticking in the hole. Finally, clean up the overflowing glue around to ensure a flat surface.

2. Breakage at the connection between the base and the backrest
For breakage at the connection, first use an electric drill to evenly drill multiple small holes on the broken surface. Apply correction fluid all over the broken surface to enhance the bonding effect. After merging the broken surfaces, copy the hole positions to the other broken surface to ensure alignment. When making a homemade adhesive, melt chopped foam board in gasoline, add baking soda to increase the viscosity, and then adjust the color with spray paint to match the original color of the chair. Dip rivets into the adhesive and insert them into the small holes. Fill the gaps on the broken surface to fix the structure. Secondary reinforcement: Mix graphite rod powder with baking soda, add 502 glue, and apply it to the damaged area to enhance impact resistance. Finally, sand the surface until smooth and spray paint of the same color as the chair to complete the repair.

3. Hydraulic system failure causing the backrest to be unadjustable
If the backrest cannot stand upright or be adjusted, it may be a problem with the hydraulic mechanism. Lay the chair on its side and check the transmission components: If the toggle is normal but the hydraulic rod has fallen off, replace the fixing screw at the pivot point. The original screw is a non-standard 10*1 model, which can be replaced with a standard No. 10 screw with a length of 30 millimeters. When installing, use a tap to create new threads in the original threaded hole or directly screw in the screw with a wrench. After screwing a nut onto the bolt, adjust the position of the screw by adding washers to prevent it from interfering with the movement range of the hydraulic rod. Key point: Ensure that the hydraulic rod can move freely without jamming after the screw is installed.

4. Backrest non-rebound issue
If the backrest cannot rebound, first check whether the adjustment toggle is loose or damaged. At the same time, check whether the nut below the toggle has fallen off, rusted, or has thread wear. If the nut problem causes the rebound mechanism to fail, refix or replace the nut according to the aforementioned repair method for nut falling off. If the adjustment toggle is damaged, replace it with a part of the same model to restore the elastic function.
