Office Chair Backrest Repair

Admin October 11, 2026

Repairing an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the specific issue. Common problems and solutions are as follows:

If the office chair backrest fails to rebound, first check the adjustment lever and the nut below it. Such issues are usually caused by a stuck adjustment mechanism or a loose nut. Try manually moving the lever to see if there is significant resistance. If there is a feeling of sticking, use a tool to tighten the nut below to an appropriate level, avoiding over-tightening or under-tightening. If the lever does not respond, the internal spring may have failed. In this case, disassemble the backrest shell to check the spring's condition and replace it with a spring of the same specification if necessary.

If the seat backrest is loose and the cushion has fallen off, the core reason is that the cushion nut has come loose. To repair it, use a hole opener to enlarge the original hole diameter to an appropriate size. After cleaning out any residue in the hole, select a No. 6 threaded rod as the fixing piece. Screw the threaded rod into the hole, then use a four-pronged zip tie to fit into the teeth of the threaded rod, cut off the excess part, and embed it into the hole to ensure the zip tie fits snugly against the hole wall. When the glue is almost set, rotate the threaded rod counterclockwise to fix the nut's position. Before the glue is completely dry, repeatedly test the threaded rod's mobility with a screwdriver to prevent adhesion. At the same time, ensure that the matching nut below rotates freely. You can adjust the height difference by adding washers to the bolt.

If the adjustable seat backrest cannot stand upright and the adjustment fails, it is mostly due to a hydraulic system failure. Lay the chair on its side and inspect the transmission components, focusing on the connection between the toggle and the hydraulic rod. If the toggle is normal but the hydraulic mechanism has come loose, it indicates that the support point fixing screw (10*1 non-standard specification) is damaged. A standard No. 10 screw can be used as a replacement. When installing, first use a tap to correct the threaded hole or directly screw the screw into its original position with a wrench (keeping the length at 30 millimeters). Since forcibly installing a non-standard screw may cause fitting errors, add a nut to the bolt to adjust the gap and ensure that the hydraulic rod's range of motion is not restricted by adding or removing washers. After repairing, repeatedly test the backrest adjustment function to confirm there is no sticking or abnormal noise.

Precautions: Disconnect the power supply before operation (for electrically adjustable chairs) and use professional tools to avoid damaging the chair's structure. When it comes to hydraulic system repairs, it is advisable to wear protective gloves to prevent contamination from hydraulic oil leaks. For complex faults or severe component aging, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.
