Office Chair Backrest Renovation
Admin October 14, 2026
The renovation of an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the material and degree of damage. The specific steps are as follows:

I. General Renovation Steps (Applicable to Fabric/Wooden Backrests)
Removing Old Fabric and Cleaning
- If the chair surface fabric needs to be replaced, first remove the old fabric. Use a staple remover to clear away any remaining staples and remove soft padding parts such as the seat cushion and backrest.
- Clean surface stains, dust, or old paint. Retain reusable accessories (such as screws and buckles) and mark their original positions to avoid misalignment during subsequent installation.
Frame Repair and Sanding
- Structural Inspection: Check the stability of the wooden or metal frame. If the chair legs are loose, use wood glue for reinforcement; if the joints are cracked, use metal corner braces or professional reinforcement parts for repair.
- Surface Treatment: Sand the frame surface with sandpaper (recommended 120 - 240 grit) to remove burrs and old paint layers, ensuring a smooth and flat surface for subsequent painting or fabric replacement.
Painting or Fabric Replacement
- Painting: Choose an environmentally friendly wood paint and apply it in 2 - 3 thin coats, with an interval of 2 - 3 hours between each coat to avoid runs. If color adjustment is required, refer to the original paint color number or use a color paste for fine - tuning.
- Fabric Replacement: Select wear - resistant fabric (such as canvas or suede). Cut the fabric about 5 centimeters larger than the frame size, leaving a fixing edge. Pull the fabric tightly from the center to theๅๅจ and fix it with a staple gun or U - shaped staples to ensure no wrinkles.
II. Special Repair Method for Plastic Backrests
If the connection between the backrest and the base is broken, follow these steps for repair:
- Hole Position Duplication: Use an electric drill to make small holes (about 2mm in diameter) on the broken surface. Coat the broken surface with correction fluid, combine the plastic parts, and duplicate the hole positions to obtain two sets of identical hole positions.
- Homemade Adhesive: Melt chopped foam board in gasoline, add baking soda to increase viscosity, and then add spray paint to adjust the color to match the original plastic.
- Fixing and Reinforcement: Dip rivets in the adhesive and insert them into the small holes. Coat the broken surface with the adhesive and fix it according to the hole positions. Take out the graphite rod from inside a battery, grind it into a fine powder, mix it evenly with baking soda, use tape to stick three sides of the broken position, fill the mixed powder into the crack, and drip 502 glue for secondary reinforcement. Repeat this step to reinforce the other sides. Finally, sand it smooth with fine sandpaper (above 400 grit) and repaint it.
III. Precautions
- Complex Structures or Valuable Materials: If the chair involves components such as gas rods, rotating bases, or materials like solid wood and genuine leather, it is advisable to consult professional repair personnel first to avoid damage caused by improper operation.
- Ventilation and Drying: After renovation, ventilate and dry the chair for more than 24 hours before use to ensure that paint or glue odors are completely dissipated and to avoid inhaling harmful gases.
