Office Chair Backrest Removal
Admin October 17, 2026
The removal of an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on its structural type. Common types and their operating steps are as follows:

I. Snap-button Backrest (Simple Office Chairs)
- Preparation Tools: No special tools are required, but a soft cloth can be prepared to protect plastic parts.
- Operating Steps:
- Turn the chair upside down and place it on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid scratches.
- Locate the plastic snap buttons on both sides of the bottom of the backrest or beneath the back. Some may require pressing the white snap buttons on both sides.
- Gently press the elastic part of the snap button with your hand or a screwdriver while pulling the backrest outward (some may need to be lifted upward first and then pulled). If the snap button is too tight, pad it with a cloth to increase friction and prevent breakage.
II. Screw-fixed Backrest (Solid Wood/Metal Frame or High-end Executive Chairs)
- Preparation Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Allen wrench (selected according to the screw type), gloves (to prevent scratches).
- Operating Steps:
- Observe the connection between the backrest and the seat to locate hidden screws (which may be under the seat bottom or the plastic cover on the inside of the backrest).
- Use the corresponding screwdriver to loosen all the fixing screws (no need to remove them completely). Some may require removing the decorative cover first.
- After the screws are loosened, hold both sides of the backrest with both hands and lift it vertically upward or pull it outward to separate. For special models (such as those where the backrest and seat are fixed with hexagonal screws), use an Allen wrench to disassemble and record the positions of short screws (such as the two short screws on the upper back).
III. Gas Lift-connected Backrest (Some Ergonomic Chairs)
- Preparation Tools: No additional tools are required, but confirm whether the gas lift has an adjustment knob.
- Operating Steps:
- Adjust the backrest to a vertical position and turn the adjustment knob at the bottom or side to the 'unlocked' state.
- Hold both sides of the backrest with both hands and pull it upward with force to remove the part connected to the gas lift base (some may require removing the base cover first).
General Precautions:
- Observe the Structure: Before disassembly, clarify the connection method to avoid damaging snap buttons or screws with brute force.
- Component Management: Store small components such as screws separately to prevent loss.
- Safe Operation: If the chair has electric adjustment functions, disconnect the power first; no additional gas release is required for gas lift models.
- Special Handling: If plastic parts are rusty, spray rust remover to assist in disassembly; when disassembling the gas lift and chair legs, invert the chair legs and tap them with a rubber mallet, or pad them with a wooden board to assist in separation.
- Reference Instructions: For branded office chairs, it is recommended to consult the 'Disassembly Guide' in the instruction manual first.
