Removing the Backrest of an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

Removing the backrest of an office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the structural type. The common types are snap-button and screw-fixed, with specific operations as follows:

Snap-Button Backrest Removal (Common in Regular Office Chairs)

  1. Flip the Chair: Place the chair upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet or foam pad) to prevent scratches on the legs or backrest from contact with hard objects.
  2. Locate the Snap Buttons: Check both sides or the bottom of the backrest for plastic snap-button structures. Some snap buttons require pressing the white buttons on both sides to unlock; carefully observe the hidden positions of the snap buttons.
  3. Detach the Backrest: Use one hand to press the snap button (or press the buttons on both sides simultaneously) and the other hand to hold the top of the backrest, then slowly pull upward. A clicking sound indicates that the snap button has disengaged, and the backrest can be fully removed.
Precautions: If pulling is difficult, check again for any hidden snap buttons that may have been missed. Avoid using excessive force to prevent the snap buttons from breaking or the chair body from deforming.

Screw-Fixed Backrest Removal (Common in High-End Executive Chairs)

  1. Locate the Screws: Check the bottom or sides of the backrest. Some screws may be covered by decorative caps and require a tool (such as a screwdriver) to pry them open.
  2. Loosen the Screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen all the fixing screws in sequence. There is no need to completely remove the screws (leave 1-2 threads to prevent loss).
  3. Remove the Backrest: Hold both sides of the backrest with both hands and lift it vertically and slowly to separate the screw holes from the chair body. If there are many screws, multiple people may be needed to collaborate to avoid tilting.
Precautions: It is recommended to take photos to record the positions of the screws before disassembly for easier reassembly later. Store the screws separately (e.g., by length or position) to prevent confusion.

General Safety Tips

  1. Keep Away from Children: Small parts (such as screws and snap buttons) may scatter during disassembly. Ensure that children are not in the operating area to prevent accidental ingestion or scratches.
  2. Consult the Manual: If the chair has a special design (such as an adjustable backrest or integrated headrest), refer to the disassembly steps in the user manual first to avoid damaging functional components.
  3. Prepare Tools: Prepare the appropriate screwdriver (such as a Phillips or flat-head) according to the screw type. No tools are required for snap-button removal, but patience is needed.

By following the above steps, you can safely and efficiently remove the backrest of an office chair. If you encounter resistance during operation, stop immediately and re-examine the structure to avoid forced disassembly that may cause damage.
