Office Chair Backrest Removal

Admin October 11, 2026

The removal of an office chair backrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on its structural type. Common types and operational steps are as follows:

I. Snap-Button Backrest (Simple Office Chairs)

  1. Observe the Connection Structure: Check if there are plastic snap-buttons at the connection between the backrest and the seat, usually located on both sides at the bottom of the backrest or beneath the back. Some snap-buttons may be covered by decorative caps and need to be uncovered first.
  2. Press the Snap-Buttons for Removal: Gently press the elastic part of the snap-buttons with your hand or a screwdriver while pulling the backrest outward. If the snap-buttons are designed to be โ€œlifted first and then pulled outwardโ€, follow this sequence. If the snap-buttons are too tight, pad a cloth to protect the plastic parts and prevent breakage.
  3. Handle Special Situations: If the backrest cannot be lifted, check for hidden snap-buttons (such as on the inside of the seat) and avoid using excessive force that may damage the components.

II. Screw-Fixed Backrest (Solid Wood/Metal Frame Chairs)

  1. Locate the Screw Positions: Screws are usually hidden beneath plastic caps at the bottom of the seat or on the inside of the backrest, some of which may require uncovering decorative caps. If it is an electrically adjustable chair, disconnect the power first.
  2. Remove the Screws: Use the corresponding screwdriver (Phillips or Allen) to unscrew all the fixing screws. Store small parts (such as washers) separately to avoid loss.
  3. Separate the Backrest: After all screws are removed, lift the backrest vertically upward or outward. For some models, tilt the seat first before separation, and pay attention to applying even force during operation.

III. Gas Cylinder-Connected Backrest (Ergonomic Chairs)

  1. Confirm the Position of the Gas Cylinder: The backrest is connected to the seat base via a gas cylinder, and some gas cylinders have adjustment knobs.
  2. Unlock the Adjustment Knob: Adjust the backrest to a vertical position and turn the knob at the bottom or side to the โ€œunlockedโ€ state.
  3. Pull Out the Gas Cylinder: Grasp both sides of the backrest with your hands and pull it upward with force. If the gas cylinder is blocked by the base guard, remove the guard first.

IV. General Precautions

  1. Preparation Before Operation: If the plastic snap-buttons or screws are rusty, spray rust remover to assist in removal. Wear gloves to prevent scratches during operation, and invert the chair and place it on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid scratches.
  2. Protect Components: If the seat has electrical functions, be sure to disconnect the power. Avoid using excessive force during removal to prevent snap-button breakage or screw stripping.
  3. Refer to the Instruction Manual: For branded office chairs, it is recommended to consult the โ€œDisassembly Guideโ€ in the product instruction manual. Some executive chairs may only require partial loosening of the screws rather than complete removal.

Tip: If the connection method between the backrest and the seat is special (such as welding or integrated molding), it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling to avoid structural damage caused by self-disassembly.
