Office Chair Backrest Removal

Admin October 10, 2026

Removing the backrest of an office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the connection type. Here are the common types and their operational steps:

I. Snap-Button Backrest (Common in Simple Office Chairs)

  1. Observe the Connection Structure: Check if there are plastic snap-buttons at the connection between the backrest and the seat, usually located on both sides at the bottom of the backrest or beneath the back. For some chairs, the backrest trim panel may be secured by lateral hooks, requiring a long flat-head screwdriver to be inserted from designated positions (such as the edge gap of the trim panel).
  2. Press and Remove the Snap-Buttons:
    • Gently press the elastic part of the snap-button with your hand or a screwdriver while pulling the backrest outward. If the snap-button is designed to be โ€œlifted up first and then pulled outward,โ€ lift the backrest vertically before separating it horizontally.
    • If the snap-button is too tight, wrap a piece of soft cloth around the plastic part to avoid breaking it due to excessive force.
    • For lateral hook structures, use the screwdriver to lift the trim panel upward until the hooks disengage, then remove the backrest.

II. Screw-Fixed Backrest (Common in Solid Wood/Metal Frame Chairs)

  1. Locate the Screw Positions: Check the screws connecting the backrest to the seat, usually hidden beneath plastic covers at the bottom of the seat or inside the backrest. For some high-end models, you may need to lift the decorative cover (such as the stitching area of a leather backrest) to see the screws.
  2. Remove the Screws:
    • Select the appropriate tool based on the screw type: a Phillips screwdriver for standard Phillips screws and an Allen wrench for hex screws.
    • After unscrewing all the fixing screws, keep small parts (such as washers and springs) to avoid losing them.
  3. Separate the Backrest:
    • Once all screws are removed, lift the backrest directly upward or outward. If the backrest is connected to the seat via a tilting mechanism, tilt the seat to a specific angle before separating them.
    • For some high-end executive chairs, the gas lift may also secure the backrest, requiring you to unlock it using the gas lift connection method first.

III. Gas Lift-Connected Backrest (Common in Ergonomic Chairs)

  1. Confirm the Gas Lift Position: The backrest is connected to the seat base via a gas lift, with some gas lifts featuring an adjustment knob (usually located at the bottom or side).
  2. Unlock the Adjustment Knob:
    • Adjust the backrest to a vertical position and turn the adjustment knob to the โ€œunlockedโ€ state (some knobs may require clockwise or counterclockwise rotation to a specific angle).
  3. Pull Out the Gas Lift:
    • Grasp both sides of the backrest with your hands and pull it upward evenly to remove the part connected to the gas lift base. If the gas lift is wrapped by a base guard, remove the guard first (usually fixed by screws or snap-buttons).

IV. General Precautions

  1. Preparation Before Operation: If the chair has electric functions (such as massage or heating), disconnect the power first. Wear anti-slip gloves to prevent scratches and prepare tools such as Phillips/flat-head screwdrivers and Allen wrenches.
  2. Protect Components: If plastic snap-buttons or screws are rusty, spray a small amount of rust remover (such as WD-40) and wait for 5 minutes before disassembly. Avoid using brute force to prevent component deformation.
  3. Refer to the Manual: For branded office chairs (such as Herman Miller and Sihoo), it is recommended to consult the โ€œDisassembly Guideโ€ in the product manual first, as some models may require special tools.
  4. Safety Tips: Keep children away during disassembly to avoid injury from falling small parts (such as screws and snap-buttons). Store screws separately and mark their positions to prevent misassembly during reassembly.
