Office Chair Backrest Remains Stationary

Admin October 22, 2026

If the office chair backrest remains stationary after reclining, it may be due to a locked function. You can try unlocking it or readjusting the lock. If you want to make the computer chair backrest recline and remain stationary, follow specific steps to operate the adjustment lever or locking mechanism.

Unlocking Method for an Office Chair Backrest That Remains Stationary After Reclining

When the office chair backrest remains stationary after reclining, it is likely that the function is locked. First, locate the locking button on the chair, which is usually designed to be easily noticeable and accessible. Once found, pull the locking button outward. After completing this action, recline the backrest slightly. This should generally unlock it, allowing the backrest to return to its normal adjustable state.

Steps to Make a Computer Chair Backrest Recline and Remain Stationary

  • Using the Adjustment Lever: First, locate the adjustment lever, which is typically located on the side or front underneath the chair. Once found, lean back against the chair backrest and gently apply pressure to recline. Continuously feel the tilt angle of the backrest during this process until you reach a comfortable tilt angle. Next, look for the locking mechanism. On some chairs, the locking mechanism is the second function of the adjustment lever. By operating the adjustment lever or knob, you can fix the backrest in its current position, making it recline and remain stationary.
  • Using the Adjustment Handle: Chairs usually have a handle specifically designed for adjusting the backrest underneath. If the computer chair backrest is locked in a reclined position, try pushing the adjustment handle in to see if it resolves the issue. If you need to adjust the backrest angle, press the handle down without releasing it and apply backward pressure with your back. Once you reach the desired angle, release the handle, and the backrest will be fixed at that angle.
  • Using the Adjustment Knob: Sit on the computer chair and locate the adjustment knob at the rear underneath the seat. Turn the knob while slightly leaning back with your back. Then release the knob, and the backrest will be fixed at the current angle. If you want to return the backrest to its original position, turn the knob again and apply slight pressure with your back, and the backrest will spring back.
