Reclining the Backrest of an Office Chair

Admin October 14, 2026

The operation and adjustment methods for reclining the backrest of an office chair should be selected based on the type of chair, as detailed below:

1. Standard Office Chair (Basic Reclining Model)

Some office chairs support a wide-angle recline but lack an independent locking mechanism. Operation Method: Simply lean back to adjust to a comfortable angle. Some models can be paired with a footrest to form a simple "nap bed," but note the following:

  • Functional Limitations: Only applicable to chairs clearly labeled as "reclinable." Basic models may not have this feature.
  • Usage Scenarios: After reclining, avoid lying flat for extended periods. These chairs are designed primarily for "leaning" rather than full-body support.

2. Cable-Controlled Adjustable Office Chair (Modern Common Model)

Controls the backrest angle via an internal steel cable, requiring you to locate the control end and check the cable status. Operation Steps:

  1. Locate the Control End: Look for buttons, levers, or tabs beneath the armrests or on the side of the seat. Press repeatedly to feel for a "click" sound or resistance change, confirming the adjustment function.
  2. Inspect the Cable Housing: Follow the cable protector to check the connection points at both ends (e.g., near the seat bottom and chassis, or the backrest pivot). If the housing has come loose from the clips, reattach and secure it.
  3. Assist Resetting: For exposed cable-control structures, gently pull or push the steel cable with your hand while operating the button to help it return to position and resolve jamming issues.

3. Mechanical Angle Adjuster (Traditional Model)

Locks the angle via a ratchet mechanism, commonly found in older office chairs. Operation Method:

  • Adjust the Angle: Turn the angle adjustment handle on the side of the seat. When the ratchet retracts, manually adjust the backrest to the desired angle.
  • Lock the Position: Release the handle, and the ratchet will pop out and re-engage under spring tension, securing the backrest.
  • Troubleshooting: If it fails to lock, check for worn ratchets, a failed spring, or a loose handle connecting rod.

4. Gas Cylinder Adjustment (Models with Rocking Function)

Common in high-end executive chairs, enabling multi-angle adjustment via a gas cylinder. Operation Method:

  • Adjustment Steps: Pull up the long lever beneath the front of the seat while slowly leaning back. The backrest will adjust its angle according to the pressure applied.
  • Fault Handling: If adjustment fails, check if the gas cylinder itself is leaking, if the linkage rod has come loose, or if the locking valve is stuck.

Precautions

  1. Function Confirmation: Before operation, confirm that the chair supports reclining to avoid damage from excessive force.
  2. Safe Usage: After reclining, avoid vigorous shaking or prolonged lying down to prevent structural instability.
  3. Jamming Handling: If resistance is encountered during adjustment, stop immediately and check if the clip is unlocked or if components are damaged. Do not apply excessive force.
