Office Chair Backrest Reclining

Admin October 11, 2026

To recline the backrest of an office chair, you usually need to operate the adjustment lever or handle under the seat. Do not lean back forcefully directly. Here are the specific operation steps and precautions:

I. Basic Reclining Adjustment (Not Fully Reclined)

  1. Locate the Adjustment Handle: After sitting normally, feel around under the seat with your hand. The handle is usually located on the right or left side of the bottom of the seat. Some models have it designed under the right armrest, mostly as a horizontal lever or handle, and some are marked with angle adjustment icons.
  2. Unlock the Backrest and Adjust the Angle: Pull or lift the handle to release the backrest locking mechanism. Keep the handle in the operating state, lean back slightly with your back to the desired angle, and then release the handle to fix it.
  3. Return to the Upright Position: Pull the handle again and apply a slight forward force with your back, and the backrest will automatically spring back to the upright position.

II. Full Reclining Adjustment (Lounge Chair Function)
If the office chair supports full reclining, there is usually a dedicated lever under the right armrest. When operating, pull the lever and lean back simultaneously, and the backrest will gradually recline to a larger angle. Some high-end models may achieve multi-gear adjustment by continuously pulling the handle, and operation should be carried out according to the specific design.

III. Operation Precautions

  1. Avoid Violent Operation: Leaning back forcefully directly may cause damage to the internal springs or gas lift structures of the backrest, especially for low-quality office chairs. Chairs with thin materials in the reclining mechanism may develop abnormal noises or adjustment jams after frequent operation, indicating that the internal parts are worn and need timely maintenance or replacement.
  2. Regular Inspection and Maintenance: If abnormal resistance, unstable fixation, or abnormal noises occur during adjustment, stop using it immediately and inspect it. Low-quality gas lifts may pose an explosion risk, and priority should be given to checking the airtightness and load-bearing performance of the gas lift.
  3. Weight Adaptability: The reclining force of some office chairs is related to the user's weight. Lighter users may need to apply additional force to trigger the reclining function, while heavier users may need to adjust the resistance (if supported).

IV. Special Design Tips
Some office chairs adopt the "synchronous tilting" technology, where the backrest and seat cushion are adjusted in tandem. You need to operate the handle and adjust your sitting posture simultaneously. Such chairs usually have operation instructions marked on the bottom of the seat or the armrests. It is recommended to read the product manual before use.
