Office Chair Backrest Recline

Admin October 10, 2026

The design of the office chair backrest recline is primarily based on ergonomics, using scientific mechanical structures to disperse lumbar spine pressure, maintain the natural curvature of the spine, and provide healthy and comfortable sitting support.

Adjustment Method

The adjustment of the office chair backrest recline angle is usually done through the adjuster located beneath the chair: Pull the adjuster upwards while applying force to your back, adjust to the desired angle, and then release the adjuster to lock it in place.

Recline Angle and Scene Adaptation

  • General Angle: Most office chairs have a recline angle of around 10ยฐ, balancing comfort and body stability.
  • Focused Work Scenario: It is recommended to adjust the backrest to an angle between 100ยฐ and 110ยฐ. This angle provides lumbar support, disperses pressure, and helps maintain focus.
  • Relaxation Scenario: Recline the backrest to an angle between 110ยฐ and 130ยฐ (some products support angles between 120ยฐ and 150ยฐ), approaching a semi-reclined position, allowing the spine to fully rest.

Recline Mechanism Types

  • Back-tilt Mechanism: The backrest reclines independently while the seat remains horizontal, achieving curvature through elastic steel plates or material flexibility.
  • Seat-tilt Mechanism: The seat and backrest are rigidly connected, and when reclining, the entire unit swings back and forth, with the angle between the seat cushion and backrest remaining constant.
  • Synchronous Tilt Mechanism: The seat and backrest move in sync at a specific ratio. When reclining, the seat cushion tilts slightly upwards, maintaining a stable center of gravity and optimizing knee pressure distribution. The STG type supports locking at any angle in segments.

Scientific Basis for Recline Design

  • Improved Comfort: The recline angle disperses pressure on the spine, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.
  • Optimized Lumbar Support: A forward-tilted or upright backrest cannot effectively support the lumbar region, leading to soreness with long-term use; the recline design conforms to the lumbar curve, relieving muscle tension.
  • Adaptation to Natural Posture: When resting or working, leaning back is a more natural posture, aligning with ergonomic principles.
  • Balance of Efficiency and Health: Moderate recline can reduce anxiety and enhance mental alertness; it also reduces eye strain (due to a more reasonable angle between the line of sight and the screen).

By reasonably adjusting the recline angle and selecting the appropriate mechanism type, office chairs can balance healthy support with the demands of different usage scenarios.
