Office Chair Backrest Loosening

Admin October 13, 2026

Loosening of the office chair backrest can be resolved by identifying the cause and performing targeted repairs. Common causes include wear and tear on the adjustment mechanism, material fatigue and deformation, and insufficient assembly precision, among others. Repairs should be carried out based on the specific issue.

Cause Analysis

  1. Wear and tear on the adjustment mechanism: The internal gas lift, gear set, or spring may wear out due to long-term stress, resulting in weak rebound or unstable fixation. For example, frequent reclining can accelerate the aging of the gas lift's seal ring, reducing support.
  2. Material fatigue and deformation: Components such as plastic buckles and metal brackets inside the backrest may deform under long-term pressure. Low-priced office chairs, which often use thin-walled steel tubes or recycled plastics, are prone to deformation after 1-2 years of use, leading to backrest wobbling.
  3. Insufficient assembly precision: Loose screws or excessive clearance in the slide rails can cause rattling and a loose feel. This is common in products where screws are not retightened after transportation or where the tolerance control at the connection between the base and the backrest is not strict.
  4. Loose adjustment rod screws: The screws on the adjustment rod are prone to loosening with frequent high-frequency use or uneven stress.
  5. Spring detachment or deformation: The spring pin at the bottom of the backrest may slip out, or the spring itself may deform.
  6. Excessive clearance in the gas lift: Aging of the gas lift can lead to excessive clearance, reducing support.

Repair Solutions

  1. Identify the location of the looseness:
    • Test the degree of wobble when reclining the chair. If there is a clicking sound, it is likely that the adjustment rod screws are not tightened. If the backrest has weak rebound, the spring or gas lift may be aging. Use a phone flashlight to check for obvious gaps at the connection below the backrest.
  2. Targeted repairs:
    • Loose adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise to expose the metal frame. Then, use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one (operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven stress).
    • Spring detachment or deformation: Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the backrest and use needle-nose pliers to reinsert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, you can purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (priced at approximately 5-15 yuan). Measure the length of the original spring before purchasing.
    • Excessive clearance in the gas lift: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, locate the gas lift adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise to increase support. Test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ during adjustment.
  3. Emergency reinforcement techniques: If you do not have professional tools, you can make temporary repairs: Cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide strips and wrap them around the joint between the backrest and the base to increase friction. Alternatively, use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift to limit the degree of wobbling, which can maintain stability for 3-7 days.

Preventive Measures

  1. Check the tightness of the screws every quarter. Those weighing over 80 kg should pay special attention to the wear of the gas lift.
  2. Prioritize models with a three-position backrest locking function. Steel-framed backrests (such as those from Sihoo and Okamura brands) are more than 30% more durable than plastic frames.
  3. Choose models with lumbar support and zoned support to extend the service life by distributing pressure.
