Office Chair Backrest Loosening
Admin October 11, 2026
Loosening of the office chair backrest can be resolved by identifying the cause and implementing targeted repairs. Common causes include loose adjustment rod screws, spring failure, aging of the gas lift rod, structural wear, or design defects. Here are the specific troubleshooting steps:

I. Identifying the Loose Location
- Test the Recline Function: If the chair back wobbles significantly and makes a clicking sound when reclining, it is likely due to loose adjustment rod screws. If the rebound is weak or the angle cannot be fixed, the spring or gas lift rod may be aging.
- Inspect Connection Gaps: Use a phone flashlight to illuminate the connection between the chair back and the base. If there is a noticeable gap, it indicates that structural components are loose or deformed.
II. Targeted Repair Solutions
Loose Adjustment Rod Screws
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise, revealing the metal mounting bracket.
- Use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one. It is recommended to operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force and ensure the screws are fully seated against the metal bracket.
Spring Detachment
- Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the chair back and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot.
- If the spring is deformed, measure the original spring length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm (approximately 5-15 yuan) online for replacement.
Excessive Gas Lift Rod Clearance
- Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and locate the gas lift rod adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part).
- Rotate the knob counterclockwise to increase support force. Test the rebound resistance in 30ยฐ increments during adjustment to avoid over-adjustment and damaging the gas lift rod.
Seat Nut Dislodgement
- Use a hole opener to enlarge the seat hole, clean out the original nut, and screw in a No. 6 threaded post.
- Insert a four-tooth zip tie into the threaded post slot, cut off the excess, and tuck it into the hole so that the nut height is flush with the seat surface. Finally, apply glue to secure the threaded post.
III. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques
If professional tools are not available, temporarily cut a 3cm-wide strip from a bicycle inner tube and wrap it around the seam between the chair back and the base to increase friction. Alternatively, use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift rod to limit wobbling. These measures can maintain stability for 3-7 days.
IV. Handling Other Causes
- Worn Adjustment Mechanism: If the gas lift rod, gear set, or spring is worn due to prolonged stress, contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.
- Material Fatigue Deformation: Plastic clips or metal brackets on low-cost office chairs are prone to deformation and require part replacement or structural reinforcement.
- Insufficient Assembly Precision: If screws are not tightened after transportation or the tolerance at connections is too large, try adjusting the knob at the back of the chair (if it has a locking function) or re-tightening the screws.
