Office Chair Backrest Locking

Admin October 09, 2026

The methods for locking the backrest of an office chair vary depending on the type of chair. Here are some common operating methods:

  1. Knob-type Locking Some office chairs are equipped with a round knob beneath the seat. By turning it clockwise, you can increase the resistance of the backrest until it is fully locked. To unlock it, turn it counterclockwise to restore the adjustment function. This design is commonly found in traditional office chairs. When operating, be mindful of the turning force to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.

  2. Lever-type Locking A lever is usually located on the side or beneath the chair body. Move it to the position marked with 'Lock' or a fixed symbol to fix the angle of the backrest. To unlock it, move the lever back to its original position. This structure is often seen in mid-to-low-end office chairs. It is easy to operate, but make sure the lever position accurately corresponds to the locking function.

  3. Button-type Locking Some computer chairs are equipped with an independent button. Pressing it directly locks the recline angle of the backrest, and pressing it again or holding it down unlocks it. This design is frequently found in high-end ergonomic chairs. The button is usually located beneath the backrest or on the side of the armrest. Pay attention to the tactile feedback of the button to confirm the locking status.

  4. Adjustment Handle/Lever-type Locking

    • Angle Adjustment and Locking: There is an adjustment handle beneath the seat. Press and hold the handle, use your back to apply pressure backward to adjust to the desired angle, and then release the handle to lock it. To return to the upright position, pull the handle again and lean back slightly with force, and the backrest will automatically spring back.
    • Directional Push-Pull Locking: The right-side handle of some chairs locks the backrest by pushing it in to the left and unlocks it by pulling it out to the right. When operating, maintain a stable sitting posture to avoid angle changes due to accidental touches.
  5. Base Cylindrical Knob Adjustment The cylindrical knob on the base can control the locking force of the recline: turning it clockwise increases the rebound support force, suitable for scenarios where a fixed recline angle is required; turning it counterclockwise reduces the resistance for dynamic adjustment. This design is often seen in high-end office chairs with multi-directional adjustment capabilities. Adjust it gradually according to your usage habits to achieve a comfortable state.

If you still cannot lock the backrest using the above methods, you can take the following measures:

  • Refer to the product manual to confirm whether the operating steps are correct.
  • Contact the manufacturer or the seller and request telephone guidance for repair.
  • If the chair is within the warranty period (usually three to five years) and telephone guidance is not possible due to technical or tool limitations, the cost of sending it back for repair is generally borne by the seller or the manufacturer.
