Office Chair Backrest Height Adjustment

Admin October 12, 2026

The methods for adjusting the height of an office chair backrest vary depending on the chair type and design. Common adjustment methods are as follows:

  1. Handle or Lever Adjustment
Most office chairs with adjustable backrests are equipped with handles or levers, typically located on the right side of the seat or beneath the armrests. When operating, first locate the adjustment mechanism (such as a handle or lever), pull or push it while gently leaning back with your back. The backrest will adjust its angle and lock in place with the movement. Some chairs require you to continuously pull the handle to the desired angle and then release it for the backrest to lock automatically; for lever-type chairs, you need to pull and hold the position, then release the lever once adjusted to secure it.

  2. Knob Adjustment System
High-end office chairs or ergonomic chairs may use a knob adjustment system, with the knob usually located near the center of the lower seat close to theๆ”ฏๆŸฑ (support column). By rotating the knob, you can adjust the recline angle and tension: rotating it clockwise may increase the recline resistance, while counterclockwise decreases it; some chairs have a separate knob to control the backrest height, which should be rotated to the target position according to the markings. Maintain a stable sitting posture during adjustment to avoid accidental movement due to a loose knob.

  3. Shared Armrest Lever Adjustment
A few office chairs integrate the backrest height adjustment with the height adjustment function on the armrest levers. When operating, you need to press or pull the lever at a specific position simultaneously, and coordinate with leaning back or forward to adjust the backrest height. This design is more common in multifunctional ergonomic chairs. Refer to the instruction manual to confirm the specific operation logic and avoid adjustment failure due to misoperation.

Precautions:

  • Ensure the chair is in a stable state before adjustment and avoid operating it while sliding or tilting.
  • If the adjustment mechanism is stuck, check for obstructions or insufficient lubrication and avoid forcing it.
  • Some chairs need to be adjusted while someone is sitting on them, using body weight to help lock the backrest angle.
  • After adjustment, test the backrest's fixation to ensure there is no looseness or abnormal noise.

The adjustment mechanisms of office chairs may vary among different brands and models. If the above methods are not applicable, it is recommended to consult the product manual or contact after-sales service for targeted guidance.
