Office Chair Backrest Height Adjustment
The method for adjusting the height of an office chair backrest depends on the specific type and design of the chair. There is currently no standardized operation, but you can refer to the following general ideas and adapt them to your actual situation:

1. Check the User Manual First or Contact After-sales Service
The adjustment methods for office chairs vary significantly across different brands and models, especially since not all chairs are equipped with a backrest height adjustment function. If your chair has this function, the user manual will typically clearly indicate the adjustment location (such as the side of the backrest or the bottom connection) and the operation method (such as levers, buttons, or rotating mechanisms). If the manual is lost, it is recommended to contact the brand's after-sales service directly, providing the chair model or photos to obtain targeted guidance and avoid damaging the chair due to incorrect operation.
2. Try Common Adjustment Methods (Based on Chair Structure)
Gas Lift Lever Adjustment (Applicable to Some Chairs with Linked Backrest and Seat Design) Some office chairs have the backrest height and seat height controlled by the same gas lift. Try to locate the metal gas lift beneath the seat that connects the chair legs and the seat. Observe whether there is a black plastic lever on the side or front of the lift. If present, try the following operations:
- Sit on the chair and use your hand to push the lever forward or pull it backward, observing whether the backrest moves with the seat height changes;
- Some models may require you to lift or press the lever up or down. After adjustment, release it, and the gas lift will automatically lock to secure the height. Note: This method is only applicable to chairs with linked backrest and seat heights. If the backrest adjusts independently, this method may be ineffective.
Manual Adjustment Mechanism on the Side or Bottom of the Backrest (Applicable to High-end Ergonomic Chairs) Some high-end chairs have independent adjustment devices on the side or bottom connection of the backrest, such as knobs, sliders, or buckles. Try the following:
- Observe whether there is a rotatable knob or a slidable track on the side of the backrest, and adjust it according to the indicated direction (such as pushing up or rotating clockwise);
- If there is a buckle at the connection between the backrest and the seat, try pressing or pulling the buckle while moving the backrest up or down to the desired position, then release the buckle to secure it.
Electric Adjustment Buttons (Applicable to Electric Ergonomic Chairs) If the chair is equipped with electric adjustment functions, there are usually buttons on the side of the seat or the armrests. Try the following:
- Press the button labeled 'Backrest Lift' or a similar function, observing whether the backrest moves;
- Some chairs support preset heights. You can long-press the button to save the current position and quickly adjust it later by short-pressing.
3. Precautions
- Ensure the chair is placed on a stable surface before adjustment to avoid accidents due to imbalance;
- Apply moderate force during operation to avoid damaging the adjustment mechanism due to excessive force;
- If the backrest cannot be secured or makes abnormal noises after adjustment, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service for inspection and repair.
If none of the above methods can achieve backrest height adjustment, it is possible that the chair does not have this function. It is recommended to meet the need by adding a cushion or replacing the chair.
