Office Chair Backrest Falls Over

Admin October 11, 2026

If the backrest of an office chair falls over, it can be adjusted and restored using the following methods:

  1. Use the adjustment handle The backrest adjustment function of most office chairs is controlled by a handle on the right side. Sit on the chair, find the adjustment handle on the right side of the seat and pull it. At the same time, lean your back slightly backward. When the backrest reaches the appropriate angle, release the handle, and the chair back will be fixed in the current position. If you need to restore it to the original angle, pull the handle again and relax your back, and the backrest will automatically spring back to its initial state. This method is suitable for chairs equipped with mechanical angle-locking devices.

  2. Operate the side adjustment buttons or handles The adjustment devices of some chairs are located on the side or under the backrest. After finding the button or handle, press or pull it, and at the same time, push the backrest forward to an upright position with your hand. Be careful to apply even force during operation to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force. This method is common in simple office chairs.

  3. Rotate the knob on the backrest A few chairs adjust the angle through a knob on the backrest. Turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise while gently pushing the backrest to the target position. After adjustment, the knob will fix the backrest through friction. If the knob is loose, try tightening it or check if the internal gears are worn.

  4. Adjust using the gas lift Chairs equipped with a gas lift can control the backrest through the adjustment device at the bottom or on the side. First, find the switch of the gas lift (usually a button or a toggle). Press it and adjust the angle by leaning backward or forward with your body. Release the switch to lock it. If the gas lift fails, check if it is leaking air or if the internal seals are aging.

  5. Check and repair the hydraulic system If the backrest is adjusted by the extension and retraction of the hydraulic rod, a hydraulic system failure will prevent it from standing upright. Lay the chair on its side and check if the pivot fixing screw at the connection between the hydraulic rod and the backrest is loose. If the screw is damaged, replace it with a standard No. 10 screw and add a washer during installation to ensure the movement space of the hydraulic rod. If the hydraulic rod leaks oil or gets stuck, contact a professional repair technician for replacement.

Precautions:

  • The adjustment methods may vary for chairs of different brands and models. If the above methods are ineffective, it is recommended to consult the instruction manual or contact the manufacturer's customer service.
  • Disassembling the chair by yourself may void the warranty or cause safety hazards. Non-professionals should not disassemble the core components casually.
