Office Chair Backrest Detachment

Admin October 10, 2026

The detachment of an office chair backrest can be resolved by identifying the loose location, implementing targeted repairs, and using emergency reinforcement methods. The specific operations are as follows:

1. Identifying the Loose Location

First, determine the type of fault:

  1. Loose adjustment rod screws: When leaning back, the chair back wobbles significantly with a clicking sound, often due to untightened screws at the base connection.
  2. Spring detachment or deformation: The chair back fails to rebound or cannot reset, possibly due to a slipped or deformed spring at the bottom.
  3. Excessive gap in the gas lift rod: Insufficient support when pressing down the chair back, caused by a loose adjustment knob leading to an enlarged gap.
  4. Socket latch issues: There is a gap between the backrest socket and the base connection, preventing the latch from securing properly.

2. Targeted Repair Solutions

Choose the appropriate method based on the fault type:

  1. Loose adjustment rod screws:

    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise, exposing the metal frame.
    • Tighten the 6-8 fixing screws sequentially with a wrench, recommending symmetric operation at 90ยฐ intervals to avoid structural deformation due to uneven force.
  2. Spring detachment or deformation:

    • Locate the spring bolt at the bottom of the chair back and use needle-nose pliers to reinsert the slipped spring hook into the slot.
    • If the spring is deformed, measure its original length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (costing about 5-15 yuan). Ensure the hook end is fully embedded in the slot during installation.
  3. Excessive gap in the gas lift rod:

    • Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and locate the black plastic adjustment knob.
    • Rotate the knob counterclockwise to increase support force, testing the rebound resistance every 30ยฐ until the chair back rebounds smoothly without sagging.
  4. Socket latch issues:

    • Remove the backrest and wrap a layer of tissue paper or thin rubber sheet around the bottom insertion rod to increase friction before reinserting it into the base, ensuring the latch is fully engaged.

3. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques

If professional tools are unavailable, temporary solutions can be used:

  • Bicycle inner tube reinforcement: Cut into 3cm-wide strips and wrap around the seam between the chair back and the base to fix the structure by increasing friction, maintaining stability for 3-7 days.
  • Rubber band bundling: Use rubber bands to bundle the movable joints of the gas lift rod, limiting the wobbling amplitude, suitable for loose screws or excessive gaps.

Note: If there is still abnormal noise or looseness after repair, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer for replacement parts or repair to avoid further damage caused by disassembly.
