How to Adjust the Backrest of an Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

The adjustment methods for the backrest of an office chair vary depending on the design of different systems. Here are the common types and operating steps:

1. Lever Adjustment System This system is usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat. For some chairs, you need to lift or push the lever first to unlock the backrest. When adjusting, users should maintain body balance to prevent the chair from tipping over due to a shift in the center of gravity. The specific operation involves two steps:

  • Unlocking and Adjustment: Locate the handle beneath the seat (usually on the right side), gently lift or push it to unlock the backrest. Then, control the recline angle by leaning back with your body or directly adjust the position of the lever to change the angle.
  • Locking the Position: After adjusting to a comfortable angle, push the handle back into place or press the locking button to secure the backrest. For example, some chairs require you to push the handle back after adjustment to complete the locking and prevent angle changes during use.

2. Knob Adjustment System Commonly found on ergonomic chairs, the knob is usually located near the central support column at the bottom of the seat. Its functions are divided into two types:

  • Recline Resistance Adjustment: Rotating the knob clockwise increases the resistance when the backrest reclines, which is suitable for scenarios where a fixed posture needs to be maintained (such as focused office work). Rotating it counterclockwise reduces the resistance, facilitating reclining for relaxation.
  • Recline Angle Adjustment: Some chairs are equipped with an independent knob that directly controls the maximum recline range of the backrest. Users can rotate it to the appropriate gear according to their needs without repeatedly adjusting their body posture.

3. Pneumatic Adjustment System Integrated with the height adjustment lever, this system enables smooth angle adjustment by pushing the lever. When operating, users should sit on the chair and remain stable, then gently pull or push the lever. The backrest will automatically adjust its angle according to the applied force. After releasing the lever, the backrest will be fixed in its current position. This type of system is mostly used in high-end office chairs, emphasizing smooth and precise adjustment.

4. Restoring to an Upright Position When you need to restore the backrest to an upright position, pull the control lever beneath the seat outward while gently pushing the backrest backward with your back. After the chair is fully upright, push the control lever back in to lock the position. This design prevents the backrest from accidentally reclining due to accidental touches, enhancing safety during use.

Precautions

  • Maintain a stable center of gravity during adjustment to avoid sudden reclining or rapid operations that could cause the chair to tip over.
  • Choose the angle according to the usage scenario: For focused work, it is recommended that the recline angle be โ‰ค15ยฐ. For relaxation and thinking, it can be adjusted to 25ยฐ-30ยฐ.
  • Regularly check the tightness of the adjustment components. If there is any looseness or jamming, contact after-sales service for repair to prevent safety hazards.
