Office Chair Backrest Adjustment
Admin October 08, 2026
The methods for adjusting the backrest of an office chair vary depending on the type. Below are the operating steps and precautions for common adjustment systems:

I. Lever Adjustment System (Common in Mid-range/High-end Office Chairs)
- Locate the Adjustment Lever: Usually positioned on the right or left side beneath the seat. Some chairs may require bending down to feel along the seat edge to find it.
- Release the Lock: If the chair has a recline lock feature, first pull up or push the lever (some designs are push-button type) to release the locking mechanism.
- Adjust the Angle: Slowly lean your body backward while simultaneously operating the lever to move the backrest until you reach a comfortable angle.
- Re-lock: After confirming the angle, operate the lever again to secure the position (some models require holding the lever down for a few seconds to complete locking).
II. Knob Adjustment System (Common in Ergonomic Chairs)
- Locate the Knob: Typically located at the center beneath the seat, near the gas lift cylinder. Some models have knobs marked with โ+โ/โ-โ symbols.
- Adjust Recline Tension: Turn the knob clockwise to increase backrest resistance (suitable for heavier individuals) or counterclockwise to decrease resistance (suitable for lighter individuals). Test the tilt feedback while turning.
- Adjust Recline Angle: Some chairs have a separate angle adjustment knob. Refer to the product manual for multi-position adjustments (e.g., within the range of 90ยฐ-135ยฐ).
III. Pneumatic/Gas Lift Adjustment Type
- Find the Adjustment Lever: Shares the same control mechanism as the height adjustment lever, usually located on the right side of the seat.
- Operating Method:
- Recline Backward: After sitting firmly, pull up the adjustment lever and hold it while slowly leaning your body backward to the desired angle. Release the lever to lock automatically.
- Return to Original Position: Pull up the adjustment lever again, lean your body forward to bring the backrest upright, and release the lever to complete resetting.
IV. Handle Adjustment Type
- Locate the Handle: Positioned on the outer side of the seat (left or right). Some models have directional indicators on the handle.
- Operating Logic:
- Recline Backward: Pull the handle upward, and the backrest will recline with your body movement. Release the handle to lock automatically.
- Return Forward: Push the handle downward, and the backrest will return to an upright position under spring action.
Safety Precautions
- Balance Check: When adjusting the recline angle, ensure the chairโs center of gravity does not shift too far backward to avoid tipping risks (especially on soft surfaces like carpets).
- Regular Maintenance: Check components such as the gas lift cylinder, bolts, and backrest connectors for looseness or damage. Refer to recall information (e.g., U.S. recall of office chairs with backrest breakage risks in March 2023, recall of bolt failure models in January 2025) to address potential hazards promptly.
- Weight Adaptation: For knob adjustment systems, adjust the tension according to body weight to prevent sudden recline due to insufficient resistance or difficulty tilting due to excessive resistance.
