Office Chair Backrest Adjustment

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chair backrest adjustment mainly includes the adjustment of the recline angle and the rebound force, with the specific methods as follows:

Recline Angle Adjustment Recline angle adjustment is one of the core functions of office chair backrest adjustment and is usually achieved through three systems:

  1. Lever Adjustment System: There is an adjustment lever near the right or left side under the seat. For some chairs, you may need to release the recline lock first (if it has this function). When operating, the user needs to shift their body weight backward while adjusting the lever to the target angle and finally lock the position (if the chair has a locking function). This system is suitable for scenarios where quick switching of sitting postures is required, but note that the position of the lever may vary depending on the brand's design.
  2. Knob Adjustment System: There is usually a knob in the center of the lower part of the seat. By turning it clockwise, the recline resistance is increased (i.e., the backrest is harder to recline), and by turning it counterclockwise, the resistance is decreased (the backrest is easier to recline). Some chairs may be equipped with a separate knob for directly adjusting the recline angle, in which case you need to refer to the instruction manual to confirm the functional correspondence. This system is suitable for users who have precise requirements for the recline force, but avoid over-rotating to prevent adjustment failure.
  3. Pneumatic Adjustment System: The pneumatic lever arranged together with the height adjustment lever enables smooth control of the backrest angle. The user can simply push the lever lightly to adjust the backrest to a comfortable angle without manually locking or adjusting the resistance. This system is easy to operate, but ensure that the pneumatic device has no air leakage or jamming problems.

Rebound Force Adjustment The rebound force refers to the force with which the backrest returns to the upright position and is usually adjusted through a dedicated knob at the bottom of the seat:

  • Clockwise rotation: Increases the backrest rebound force, suitable for users with a larger body weight or those who need the backrest to rebound quickly.
  • Counterclockwise rotation: Decreases the backrest rebound force, suitable for users with a lighter body weight or those who want the backrest to recover slowly. When adjusting, rotate gradually and test the effect to avoid excessive force causing the backrest to suddenly rebound or insufficient force causing the backrest to be unable to provide support.

Precautions

  1. Keep your body balanced when adjusting to avoid the chair tipping over due to excessive backward shift of the center of gravity.
  2. Choose the recline angle according to work requirements: For focused work, it is recommended to choose a small angle (e.g., 5ยฐ - 10ยฐ), and for relaxation and thinking, a large angle (e.g., 15ยฐ - 20ยฐ) can be chosen.
  3. If the chair has a locking function, confirm the locked state after adjustment to prevent the angle from changing unexpectedly during use.
