Office Chair Backrest Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair backrest adjustment can be achieved through angle adjustment, height adjustment, and the use of auxiliary cushions. Here are the specific methods:

1. Angle Adjustment Most modern office chairs are equipped with a recline function, with the ideal support angle being 95-110 degrees (the backrest slightly reclines). If the chair cannot be adjusted, a change of 10 degrees can reduce lumbar pressure by more than 15%. When adjusting, check the side of the seat for a knob or lever. Gently pull or rotate it, and the backrest will tilt backward. It is recommended to try different angles and choose a position that fits the curve of the back and allows for comfortable sitting for long periods. For example, when reclining, the contact area between the waist and the backrest increases, distributing pressure; if the angle is too small, the waist will be suspended and prone to fatigue; if the angle is too large, it may affect operational efficiency.

2. Height Adjustment Some chair backrests support vertical movement, and high-end models usually have this function. The adjustment lever is generally located at the back or side of the backrest. Pull it up and slide the backrest up and down to adjust it to a position where both the waist and back are supported. For example, taller individuals need to raise the backrest so that the area below the shoulder blades is supported; shorter individuals need to lower it to avoid a suspended waist. Key criterion: When sitting upright, the backrest should cover the area from the lumbar spine to the thoracic spine to avoid excessive stress on a single area.

3. Using a Cushion for Auxiliary Adjustment If the chair has limited adjustment functions, you can optimize support by adding a cushion:

  • Thickness Selection: Pair a 5-centimeter thin cushion with an 8-10-centimeter thick cushion. Place the thin cushion horizontally in the middle of the backrest, about two fingers' width above the waistband; insert the thick cushion vertically between the thin cushion and the backrest to enhance lumbar support.
  • Material and Size: Prioritize choosing a memory foam cushion with a groove in the middle, which can shape itself according to body temperature and distribute pressure more effectively. The width should cover the entire back, and the height should be from the waistband to the middle of the shoulder blades.
  • Support Force Test: After sitting upright, insert your fist between the waist and the cushion. If the space is too small, the support is too strong; if the space is too large, the support is insufficient. The ideal state is that the fist can be easily inserted without significant shaking.

Precautions: After adjustment, maintain a natural sitting posture and avoid bending forward or leaning forward. If you use a computer for long periods, it is recommended to pair it with an adjustable-height desk so that your line of sight is level with the top of the screen, further reducing neck strain.
