Office Chair Back Removal
Admin October 11, 2026
The method for removing the backrest of an office chair depends on the type of backrest. Follow the corresponding steps as outlined below:

I. Snap-Button Backrest (Common in Simple Office Chairs)
- Locate the Snap Buttons: Observe the connection between the backrest and the seat. Typically, plastic snap-button structures can be found on both sides at the bottom of the backrest or beneath it.
- Unlock the Buttons: Gently press the elastic part of the snap buttons with your hand or a screwdriver. Some may require lifting upwards first and then pulling outwards. If the buttons are too tight, wrap the tool with a cloth to avoid excessive force that could break the plastic.
- Separate the Backrest: Once the buttons are unlocked, pull the backrest outwards or upwards evenly with both hands.
II. Screw-Fixed Backrest (Common in Solid Wood/Metal Frame Chairs)
- Expose the Screws: Check the bottom of the seat or the inside of the backrest. Remove the plastic covers that conceal the screws (use a screwdriver to gently pry them off).
- Remove the Screws: Select the appropriate tool based on the screw type (cross-head or hexagonal) and unscrew all the fixing screws. Keep small parts like washers safe.
- Separate the Structure: After all screws are removed, lift the backrest upwards or tilt the seat to separate them. Some models may require adjusting the seat angle first before operation.
III. Gas Cylinder-Connected Backrest (Common in Ergonomic Chairs)
- Identify the Gas Cylinder Position: The backrest is connected to the seat base via a gas cylinder. Some gas cylinders have adjustment knobs.
- Unlock the Gas Cylinder: Adjust the backrest to a vertical position and turn the knob at the bottom or side to the 'unlock' position.
- Pull Out the Gas Cylinder: Grasp both sides of the backrest and pull it straight upwards with force. If there is a protective plate at the base, remove it first before operation.
Precautions
- Safe Operation: If the chair has electric adjustment functions, you must disconnect the power first; gas cylinder chairs do not require manual deflation.
- Rust Prevention: If the plastic snap buttons or screws are rusty, spray rust remover and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before disassembly to avoid damaging the parts.
- Refer to the Manual: Before disassembly, prioritize checking the 'Disassembly Guide' in the product manual to confirm special structures or hidden screw locations.
- Control the Force: Maintain steady movements during operation to avoid violent disassembly that could deform the frame or break the connectors.
Tip: If you encounter complex structures (such as hidden snap buttons or embedded screws) during disassembly, it is recommended to take photos to record the steps for easier reassembly or seeking professional help later.
