Office Chair Back Cushion Heightening
Admin October 14, 2026
Heightening the back cushion of an office chair can be achieved by using a heightening backrest cushion or making a DIY heightening cushion. Before heightening, it is necessary to take measurements and select materials properly.

Heightening Methods
- Using a heightening backrest cushion: This is the most time-saving and labor-saving option. It can be directly hung or tied to the original backrest, instantly extending the support point upward by about 15 centimeters, providing effective support for the head, neck, shoulders, back, and waist. Its inner layer is made of high-elastic foam, combined with a breathable mesh fabric on the outer layer, ensuring no stuffiness even after sitting for a long time. The thickened waist design conforms to the physiological curvature and prevents the body from sliding down. There are various fixing methods, including adjustable straps that can be clipped onto the backrest of a chair or sofa, ensuring a firm and non-slip fit; seatbelt fixing, which is suitable for car seats and can be directly buckled; ISOFIX interfaces that can be inserted into the reserved sockets of the seat, providing good stability; and LATCH fixing, which is clipped into the connection between the seat cushion and the backrest, suitable for vehicles with child seats. Before purchasing, measure the length of the straps and confirm their compatibility with your own seat. These heightening cushions are suitable for various scenarios such as sofas, office chairs, and car seats, with prices ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan.
- DIY making a heightening cushion: This option is more cost-effective and allows for customization of size and color according to needs. Prepare cotton fabric (or canvas), pearl cotton, scissors, and a needle and thread (a household sewing machine is more convenient). The operation steps are as follows: First, cut the fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric of the same size according to the measured dimensions, leaving a 2-centimeter seam allowance on all sides. The size can be slightly larger for easy adjustment later. Then, sew the cover. Place the two pieces of fabric with their right sides facing each other and sew three sides together, leaving one side open for filling with pearl cotton.
Preparations Before Heightening
- Measurement: Before starting, use a tape measure to measure the height and width of the original backrest to determine the height to be increased. Generally, the distance from the top of the backrest to the back of the head when sitting upright is the reference value for heightening. Adults usually need to increase it by 10 - 15 centimeters.
- Material selection: Common choices include high-elastic foam, which has good support and quick rebound, suitable for the filling layer; memory foam, which has slow rebound characteristics and can conform to the body curve, reducing fatigue after sitting for a long time; pearl cotton, which is inexpensive and lightweight, suitable for DIY filling; and wooden or plastic boards, which can be used as heightening bases to increase overall stability. When purchasing a heightening cushion, focus on its thickness, density, and support. Test it by pressing with your hand. Only those that can quickly rebound without deformation are qualified. Low-quality foam that collapses with a single press will become indented after a short time. If breathability is important, choose models with a mesh fabric or honeycomb gel material on the outer layer.
