Office Chair Auto-Sinking
Office chair auto-sinking is usually caused by a malfunction of the gas lift, commonly due to the aging or damage of the seal ring, which leads to the leakage of high-pressure nitrogen gas. Poor-quality gas lifts, a malfunctioning adjustment lever, or loose connections can also cause this issue.

The gas lift is the core component for the height adjustment function of an office chair, using high-pressure nitrogen gas inside for support and adjustment. When the seal ring is damaged due to aging, wear, or material degradation, the gas leaks slowly, reducing the support force. As a result, the chair cannot maintain the set height and continuously sinks. Poor-quality gas lifts may have thin walls, substandard materials, or insufficient gas purity, which can accelerate the failure of the sealing system after long-term use, further increasing the risk of sinking. In addition, a stuck or malfunctioning adjustment lever or loose connections between the gas lift and the seat or the five-star base can also cause abnormal support force transmission, indirectly leading to sinking.
It is important to distinguish between normal sinking and a malfunction: When sitting down, if the chair sinks slightly by 1-2 centimeters and can rebound on its own, it is a normal buffering process of the gas lift; if the sinking amplitude exceeds this range or the chair continues to slide down slowly, it indicates a functional malfunction of the gas lift.
Fault Diagnosis and Handling Suggestions:
- Initial Inspection: Check for oil stains leaking from the connections between the gas lift and the seat or the five-star base, which are typical signs of a damaged sealing system. Press the seat to test the buffering resistance. If the resistance is significantly reduced or there are abnormal noises, it may indicate gas leakage.
- Safe Handling: After confirming a gas lift malfunction, do not disassemble it yourself. Improper handling of the high-pressure gas inside the gas lift may cause an explosion risk. It is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to replace the gas lift or directly replace the entire chair.
- Preventive Measures: When purchasing, prioritize office chairs that have passed safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard) and avoid using poor-quality gas lifts. During daily use, avoid frequently adjusting the height or sitting with excessive force. Regularly check the tightness of the connections to extend the service life of the gas lift.
