Office Chair Assembly Materials

Admin October 14, 2026

The assembly materials for office chairs can be divided into three main categories according to type and design requirements: engineering plastics, metal materials, and composite materials, with other auxiliary materials used for specific functional optimization.

Engineering plastics are the mainstream choice for mid-to-low-end popular office chairs, with common materials including polypropylene (PP) and nylon (PA). These materials are molded through injection molding processes and have the characteristics of low cost, light weight, and easy processing. However, their load-bearing capacity is relatively limited and they are typically used for non-core load-bearing components such as chair backs and armrests. Their surfaces can be enhanced for wear resistance through spraying or electroplating treatments, but long-term use may lead to aging and cracking issues.

Metal materials are the core structural materials for mid-to-high-end ergonomic office chairs and are mainly divided into two categories:

  1. Cold-rolled welded steel pipes: Connected through welding processes, their surfaces are treated with electrophoretic coating or spray coating to form a rust-proof layer. They have a load-bearing capacity of over 150 kg and are commonly used for chair seat frames and five-star bases.
  2. Aluminum alloys: Combining lightweight properties (with a density only one-third that of steel) with rust-proof and corrosion-resistant performance, they are mostly used for chair back adjustment brackets and lifting gas rod casings, but their cost is 30%-50% higher than that of steel pipes.
In addition, stainless steel and wrought iron materials are also used for special design components, such as hinge structures for foldable chairs.

Composite materials represent the technological direction of high-end office chairs:

  • Fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP): Composed of glass fibers and resin, they have twice the strength of steel but are 40% lighter in weight. They are resistant to acid and alkali corrosion and are commonly used for the streamlined casings of gaming chairs.
  • Carbon fiber sheets: With a modulus five times that of aluminum alloys, they are mostly used for the load-bearing structures of high-end outdoor chairs. However, the cost of a single piece exceeds one thousand yuan, and their market penetration rate is relatively low.

Auxiliary materials focus on functional optimization:

  • Wood-based composites: Medium-density fiberboard or plywood are used for the frames of affordable panel-type office chairs and require edge sealing treatments to prevent formaldehyde release.
  • Soft upholstery materials: PU leather or breathable mesh fabrics paired with high-density foam (with a density of โ‰ฅ30 kg/mยณ) or latex fillers can enhance the elasticity and breathability of the chair surface. Among them, the cost of latex is twice that of ordinary foam, but its service life is extended by 50%.

Material selection requires balancing performance and cost: Engineering plastics are suitable for budget-constrained scenarios, metal materials meet daily office needs, and composite materials are aimed at the high-end custom market.
