Office Chair Armrest Turns White

Admin October 10, 2026

The whitening of an office chair armrest can be caused by various factors and requires identification and treatment based on the material and specific manifestations. Here are some common situations and solutions:

If the paint on a wooden sofa armrest turns white, it is usually related to exposure to high temperatures. When the wooden armrest comes into contact with high-temperature objects, such as hot tea cups or electric heaters, the paint may turn white due to uneven heating. In this case, you can cover the white area with a warm towel and use the heat to gradually restore the paint to its original state until the whiteness fades. Be careful not to make the towel too hot to avoid burning your skin or further damaging the paint.

If the surface of a solid wood sofa armrest turns white due to the placement of a wet cloth, it is essentially because the water or chemicals in the cleaning agent have damaged the protective layer on the furniture surface and penetrated into the wood, altering the path of light reflection. Common causes include prolonged water penetration, the use of improper cleaning agents (such as those containing alkaline or corrosive ingredients) that corrode the surface, and an imbalance in environmental humidity (such as air that is too humid or too dry). For this situation, you can try the following simple home repair methods:

  • White Vinegar Method: Mix white vinegar with warm water in a 1:1 ratio. Dip a soft cotton cloth into the solution and gently wipe the white area. Immediately dry the area with a dry cloth after wiping. The acidity of the white vinegar can neutralize alkaline residues and help restore the luster of the wood surface.
  • Toothpaste Polishing Method: Choose an ordinary white toothpaste and apply a small amount to the white area. Gently wipe it with a soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain. The tiny particles in the toothpaste can act as a polishing agent, repairing minor scratches and whitening.

If the armrest of a computer chair turns white and briefly recovers after being wiped with a wet cloth but then turns white again, it may be due to the deterioration of the internal material. For example, a plastic armrest may have its internal structure damaged due to long-term use or exposure to chemicals (such as alcohol or disinfectants), resulting in an irreversible whitening of the surface. In this case, check the material of the armrest. If it is plastic and severely deteriorated, it is recommended to replace the armrest or contact the manufacturer for repair.

The discoloration of an office chair handle may also be due to oxidation or poor paint quality. A plastic handle may turn white due to oxidation after long-term exposure to the air, and you can try to restore it by wiping it with toothpaste. If the paint peels off due to poor spray-painting quality, you can buy stickers that match the color of the original handle for decoration or directly replace it with a new handle. When replacing, pay attention to matching the size to avoid installation difficulties.
