Office Chair Armrest Too Low
If the armrest of an office chair is too low, it can be resolved by adjusting the armrest height or using auxiliary tools. The core goal is to keep the elbows bent at a 90ยฐ angle naturally and avoid excessive stress on the wrists.

I. Adjusting the Armrest Height (for chairs with adjustable armrests)
- Adjust the seat height: First, ensure that your feet are flat on the ground and your knees are bent at a 90ยฐ angle. This is the basic ergonomic sitting posture. If the seat is too high or too low, it will indirectly affect the suitability of the armrest height.
- Measure the elbow height: Sit up straight and let your upper arms hang naturally close to your torso. At this point, your elbows will naturally bend at a 90ยฐ angle. Use a soft tape measure to measure the vertical distance from the tip of your elbow to the seat surface. This value is the standard height for the armrests, usually between 20-25 centimeters.
- Adjust the armrests to the target height: Support the tip of your elbow with your hand and slowly raise or lower the armrests until they can fully support the weight of your arms and your shoulders do not feel raised or lowered. After adjustment, test repeatedly to ensure that your wrists do not need to bend excessively or turn outward when typing or operating the mouse.
II. Using Auxiliary Tools (for chairs with non-adjustable armrests)
- Remove or raise the seat: If the armrests are fixed and too low, you can try removing the armrests (make sure the chair structure allows it) or placing a footrest under the seat. The footrest should be stable and height-adjustable to keep your knees bent at a 90ยฐ angle and indirectly raise the relative height of your arms.
- Install armrest height extenders: Choose height extenders made of thick, slow-rebound memory foam material. Their advantage is that they can be firmly fixed to the original armrests to prevent slipping. The thickness of the height extenders should be selected according to the actual distance from the elbow to the seat surface, usually 3-5 centimeters will meet the needs. After installation, check whether the elbows are hanging naturally at a 90ยฐ angle and whether the wrists are no longer forced to turn outward to reach the keyboard.
Long-term effects and prevention: Low armrests can cause the elbows to hang in the air, forcing the wrists to bend excessively to touch the desktop and compress the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is one of the main causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, timely adjustment of the armrest height or the use of auxiliary tools can not only relieve current discomfort but also prevent long-term health problems. If you still feel wrist pain after adjustment, it is recommended to use a wrist rest or adjust the keyboard height in combination to further optimize the operating posture.
