Office Chair Armrest Suspension

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chair armrest suspension can lead to a series of health issues, including shoulder and neck muscle tension, cervical spine degeneration, and nerve compression.

1. Persistent Shoulder and Neck Muscle Tension
When the armrests of an office chair are suspended, the shoulders remain unsupported and in a suspended state continuously. The trapezius muscles need to exert long-term effort to maintain arm balance. For every 1 centimeter the arms are suspended, the pressure on the shoulder muscles increases by 5%. This continuous load can cause excessive tension in the trapezius muscles, manifesting as hard nodules (cord-like structures) in the shoulder and neck area, with a stiff and painful touch. For example, 28-year-old programmer Xiao Li, after typing with his armrests too low and suspended for half a year, had a trapezius muscle tension level 2.3 times that of a normal person, with restricted head-turning movements.

2. Damage to Cervical Spine Structure and Function
Long-term suspension disrupts the balance of the muscles around the cervical spine, accelerating cervical spine degeneration. The normal cervical spine has a physiological lordosis, but in a suspended state, the continuous traction of the trapezius muscles forces the cervical spine curvature to straighten or even reverse. In Xiao Li's case, X-rays showed the disappearance of his cervical spine physiological lordosis, a typical sign of cervical spine degeneration. Additionally, muscle imbalance can lead to cervical facet joint disorders, further causing symptoms such as dizziness and headaches.

3. Increased Risk of Nerve Compression
Tension in the trapezius muscles may compress the nerves passing through the shoulder and neck area (such as the brachial plexus), leading to numbness and tingling in the hands and even affecting fine motor skills. This nerve compression may worsen at night, manifesting as frequent turning during sleep and difficulty falling asleep. Research indicates that among shoulder and neck problems caused by improper armrest height, about 15% of patients experience hand numbness symptoms.

4. Prevention and Adjustment Recommendations
To avoid the above issues, ensure that the armrest height is level with the elbows, so that the arms hang naturally with the elbow joints at a 90-degree angle. If the armrests are not adjustable, you can raise the seat height or use elbow supports for additional support. Additionally, perform shoulder and neck stretches every hour of work to relieve muscle tension. For those who already have symptoms, seek medical attention promptly and restore muscle balance through physical therapy (such as ultrasound and massage) or rehabilitation training.
