Office Chair Armrest Separation

Admin October 09, 2026

Separating the armrests of an office chair requires operation based on the fixing method. Common methods are divided into two categories: screw fixing and snap-fit fixing. The specific steps are as follows:

Steps for Screw Fixing Separation

  1. Locate the Screw Positions
Check the gaps at the bottom, sides, or where the armrests connect to the chair body. Some screws may be covered by plastic caps and need to be gently pried open with a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar) to expose the screw heads. For hidden designs, observe the fine grooves at the connection between the armrests and the chair body, as screws are usually hidden there.

  2. Select Matching Tools
Choose tools according to the screw type: a flat-head screwdriver for flat-head screws, a Phillips screwdriver for Phillips screws, and an Allen wrench for hex-head screws. The tool must fully match the screw slot; otherwise, it may cause slippage or damage to the screw head. If the screws are rusty, a small amount of WD-40 lubricant can be sprayed to help loosen them.

  3. Unscrew the Screws
Turn the screws counterclockwise with even force to avoid breaking them due to excessive force. If the screws are stuck, try wrapping a rubber band around the screwdriver head to increase friction, or gently heat the area around the screws with a heat gun (only for plastic parts; use caution with metal parts).

  4. Separate the Armrest Components
After unscrewing all the screws, hold the armrest cover firmly with both hands and gently lift it upwards or pull it outwards. If there is significant resistance, check for any remaining screws or snap-fits that have not been loosened. Do not forcefully pull to avoid deforming the components.

Steps for Snap-Fit Fixing Separation

  1. Find the Snap-Fit Gaps
Observe along the joint between the armrest cover and the frame. Snap-fits are usually hidden in the seams or at the edges of the connections. Some designs may use hidden snap-fits, requiring you to press or slide the surface with your fingers to find loose points.

  2. Use a Plastic Pry Bar
Insert a plastic pry bar or a hard plastic card into the gap and slowly pry from one end. Avoid using metal tools (such as screwdrivers), as they can easily scratch the surface or break the snap-fits. If the snap-fits are tight, pry alternately at multiple positions to gradually release the pressure.

  3. Gradually Separate the Snap-Fits
Pry open all the snap-fits along the seam direction, maintaining even force. If you hear a 'click' sound, it means the snap-fit has been released, and you need to continue until all are loosened. If a snap-fit breaks, contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.

  4. Remove the Armrest Cover
After all the snap-fits are released, directly remove the armrest cover. If the cover is still connected to the frame, check for any missed snap-fits or other fixing methods (such as adhesive).

Other Considerations

  • Special Design Handling: Some gaming chairs or modular office chairs may use knobs to adjust the height and support disassembly. Check the inside of the armrests for sliding mechanisms or hidden buttons and follow the instructions in the manual.
  • Part Preservation: Keep the separated screws, snap-fits, and other small parts in one place to avoid losing them and affecting subsequent reassembly.
  • Dust Plug Check: If you cannot find the screws, check the bottom of the chair body for dust plugs covering the screw holes. Remove them to proceed with the operation.
  • Manual Reference: If you still cannot disassemble the chair, refer to the product manual to confirm if it is marked as detachable or contact after-sales service for professional guidance.
