Office Chair Armrest Requirements

Admin October 12, 2026

The requirements for office chair armrests mainly include height, front-back, and width adjustments, load-bearing capacity, material and structure, differential adjustment, and locking mechanisms.

Height Adjustment: The armrest height should be flexibly adjustable to accommodate people of different heights and desk heights. The standard height is referenced by aligning the elbow tip horizontally with the armrest, typically ranging between 20-25 centimeters. During adjustment, ensure that the armrest can fully support the weight of the arms, preventing shoulder strain from improper height, thereby reducing shoulder and neck fatigue.

Front-Back Adjustment: The armrests should support forward and backward movement, allowing the elbow bend point to align vertically with the edge of the desk. This design ensures that the forearms rest naturally on the armrests, with the wrists flat against the desk, avoiding concentrated wrist pressure from arm suspension or excessive forward extension, reducing the risk of occupational injuries such as mouse hand.

Width Adjustment: The armrest width should symmetrically match shoulder width. When arms hang naturally, the distance between the elbows is generally consistent with shoulder width, with the inner side of the armrests fitting closely against the outer sides of the upper arms, with a gap of no more than 2 centimeters. For body size differences, individuals with a larger build should choose armrests 3 centimeters wider than shoulder width, while those with a smaller build can opt for models with inward adjustment functions to enhance comfort.

Load-Bearing Capacity: The armrests must have sufficient structural strength and durability to prevent breakage or deformation that could lead to safety incidents. Domestic standards specify that office chairs should accommodate a maximum user weight of 102 kilograms, with all structures, including the armrests, capable of safely supporting users within this weight range to ensure long-term stability.

Material and Structure: Material selection directly affects load-bearing performance. Modified PP (polypropylene) materials, especially glass fiber-reinforced PP, are commonly used as high-quality materials for modern office chair armrests due to their high rigidity, strength, and impact resistance. In terms of structural design, a sturdy metal frame combined with triangular support and other mechanical designs can effectively disperse pressure and enhance overall stability.

Differential Adjustment: The heights of the left and right armrests should support independent adjustment rather than simultaneous up-and-down linkage. This design accommodates different usage conditions for the left and right hands, such as when the left hand requires a lower armrest for keyboard operation, the right armrest can remain at its original height, enhancing usage flexibility.

Locking Mechanism: After adjusting the armrests to the appropriate position, they should be secured with a locking mechanism to prevent them from popping up or sliding. This function ensures that the armrests remain stable during use, avoiding arm support failure due to looseness, which could affect sitting posture health.
