Office Chair Armrest Replacement

Admin October 19, 2026

Replacing an office chair armrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on the fixing method. Here are the common fixing methods and operational steps:

1. Screw Fixing

Commonly found on wooden or metal chairs, screw heads are mostly cross-shaped or hexagonal. If the remaining part can be identified as screw fixing, use the appropriate tool for operation:

  • Cross-shaped screws: Use a cross-head screwdriver to turn counterclockwise to loosen. If the screw is rusty, drip lubricating oil and let it sit for a few minutes before trying again. If the screw is stripped, use the screwdriver to tilt against the edge of the screw head and tap lightly with a hammer to loosen before turning it out.
  • Hexagonal screws: Use a hexagonal wrench of the corresponding size for operation. The steps are similar to those for cross-shaped screws, and care should be taken to apply even force to avoid stripping.

2. Pin Fixing

Commonly found on folding chairs or simple chairs, the pin is a metal rod that runs horizontally through the armrest. If the remaining part is a pin, use needle-nose pliers first:

  • Clamp the exposed end with the pliers' jaws, rotate slightly left and right to loosen the adhesion, and then pull it out forcefully.
  • If the end is too short to grip, use the pliers to clamp a piece of hard cloth or tape-wrapped around the end to increase friction and repeat the rotation and pulling action.

3. Snap-on Fixing

Commonly found on plastic chairs, it uses elastic claws to grip the chair frame. If the remaining part is a snap-on, try the following methods:

  • Without tools: Find a hard stick slightly thicker than the mounting hole or roll up a piece of hard cardboard, press it against the broken surface, and slowly turn the armrest in the direction of the thread.
  • With tools: Bend a piece of wire into a U-shape, insert the bottom into the hole, and hold both ends of the wire with your hands to rotate, using friction to bring out the residue. If there are many debris particles in the hole, first use long tweezers to pick out the large pieces, and then use a vacuum cleaner to clean the small particles.

4. Rivet Fixing

Commonly found on metal chairs, rivet heads are smooth and threadless. To handle rivets, an electric drill is required:

  • Select a drill bit that matches the diameter of the rivet, drill a hole in the center of the rivet head, and gradually enlarge the hole diameter until the rivet loosens and falls out.
  • During operation, the chair should be fixed to prevent the drill bit from slipping and damaging the chair surface.

5. Special Case Handling

If the size of the chair armrest does not match the original hole position, replacement can be achieved by modifying the hole position:

  • For example, to replace the armrest of an old industrial chair with an adjustable armrest, first mark the new hole position, enlarge or add new holes with a drilling tool, and then install the new armrest. During this process, ensure that the hole positions are aligned to prevent the armrest from wobbling after installation. The process takes about 30 minutes (the specific time varies depending on tool proficiency).

Precautions: Before operation, confirm the material and fixing method of the chair to avoid using excessive force that may damage the chair surface. If the remaining part is difficult to handle, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person.
