Office Chair Armrest Removal

Admin October 12, 2026

Removing the armrests of an office chair requires preparing tools and following the steps below:

I. Prepare Tools You need to prepare specialized tools such as a box-end wrench, screwdrivers, and pliers in advance. Ensure that the tools match the screw specifications. If the screws are severely rusted, prepare a small amount of cleaner or engine oil to assist with the removal.

II. Determine the Armrest Type Office chair armrests come in two types: fixed and adjustable:

  • Fixed Armrests: These have a simple structure and are fixed to the base solely with screws.
  • Adjustable Armrests: These have plugs and wire-adjustment mechanisms at the bottom, requiring additional handling of the adjustment components.

III. General Removal Steps

  1. Flip the Seat: Turn the chair upside down so that the bottom faces up for easier operation.
  2. Remove the Screws: Use a box-end wrench or screwdriver to unscrew the screws connecting the armrests to the base. If the screws are rusted, spray cleaner to soften the rust before removal.
  3. Handle the Base Hooks: Use pliers to grip the metal hooks on the base, gently bend them outward to release them from the slots, and then loosen the bottom nuts.
  4. Separate the Armrests: After completing the above steps, the armrests can be removed from the base as a whole.

IV. Additional Steps for Adjustable Armrests

  1. Adjust the Wires: Locate the plugs at the lower part of the armrests, observe the screw holes at the bottom, and use a screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen the wires (reduce resistance).
  2. Remove the Connecting Screws: After adjusting the wires, use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws connecting the armrests to the base and remove the armrests.

V. Precautions

  • Handle with Care: Avoid scratching the seat surface or hitting the ground during removal to prevent parts from falling and causing injuries.
  • Check the Screw Conditions: If you find loose screws, tighten them promptly; if they are severely rusted, it is recommended to replace them with new screws.
  • Observe the Wobbling Situation: Pay attention to the gap between the armrests and the connectors during removal. If there is significant wobbling, check if the base is loose to prevent safety hazards after installation.

VI. Tips and Suggestions

  • Lubrication Treatment: When reinstalling the armrests, apply petroleum jelly or lubricating oil to the corners of the armrests to reduce friction and extend their service life.
  • Handle Stubborn Plugs: If the base plugs are difficult to remove, drip a small amount of engine oil or cleaner into them, let them sit for 5 minutes, and then shake the plugs. Try to remove them after they become loose.
  • Protect the Sensors: Some office chair armrests have built-in pressure sensors. Mark their positions during removal to avoid damage or loss.
