Office Chair Armrest Removal
Admin October 09, 2026
The removal of an office chair armrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on its fastening mechanism. Below are common steps and tool preparations:

I. Tool Preparation
Select the appropriate tools based on the fastening method:
- Screw Fastening: A Phillips or Allen wrench is required. If the screws are rusty, lubricating oil can be prepared.
- Clip Fastening: For pressure clips, fine-edged flat-nose pliers are needed; for snap clips, fingers or thin tools can be used.
- Pin Fastening: Needle-nose pliers or regular pliers are required. If the pin is too short, hard cloth or tape can be prepared to increase friction.
- Emergency Without Tools: Hard wooden sticks, tightly rolled cardboard, or U-shaped wire (for removing residues).
II. Identify the Fastening Method
- Screw Fastening: Check for screw holes at the connection between the armrest and the chair, commonly found on wooden or metal chairs. Screws may be hidden under decorative covers.
- Clip Fastening: If there are no screws, observe the connection for pressure clips (which need to be pried open) or snap clips (which need to be pressed to release), commonly found on plastic chairs.
- Pin Fastening: If the armrest is fixed by a metal rod running horizontally (common on folding chairs), confirm whether the ends of the pin are exposed.
III. Removal Steps
Screw Fastening:
- Use the appropriate screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen them. For rusty screws, apply lubricating oil and let it sit for 5 minutes before trying again.
- For executive chairs, pay attention to the direction of the screws to avoid over-tightening and causing the screws to strip.
- After removing the screws, keep them safe to prevent loss.
Clip Fastening:
- Pressure Clips: Gently tap the edge of the pressure clip with fine-edged flat-nose pliers to gradually loosen it and remove the armrest.
- Snap Clips: Use fingers or thin tools to press the release end of the clip while pulling the armrest outward.
Pin Fastening:
- Use pliers to grip the exposed end of the pin, rotate it left and right to loosen any adhesion, and then pull it out.
- If the end is too short, use pliers to grip hard cloth or tape wrapped around the end to increase friction and then pull it out.
Emergency Without Tools:
- Hard wooden stick or cardboard: Press against the broken surface and slowly rotate the armrest in the direction of the thread.
- U-shaped wire: Insert into the mounting hole, pinch both ends with both hands, and rotate to use friction to bring out any residues.
IV. Precautions
- Handle with care during removal to avoid scratching the chair surface or dropping the armrest and causing injury.
- If any screws connecting the base are loose, tighten them promptly.
- Observe the movement between the armrest and the connector. If it wobbles, check if the base is loose to prevent safety hazards.
