Office Chair Armrest Removal

Admin October 09, 2026

The method for removing office chair armrests should be selected based on the fastening method. Here are the common types and operations:

I. Screw Fastening Method

  1. Locate the screws: Check the gaps at the bottom, sides of the armrest, or where it connects to the chair body. Some screws may be covered by plastic caps and need to be pried open with a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar).
  2. Select the tool: Choose a matching screwdriver or Allen wrench according to the type of screw slot (flat-head/cross-head) or the size of the Allen key. If the screws are rusty, you can spray lubricant (such as WD-40) in advance to help loosen them.
  3. Unscrew the screws: Turn all the fixing screws counterclockwise with even force. Be sure to keep the screws to prevent loss.
  4. Separate the components: Hold the armrest cover firmly with both hands and gently lift it upwards or pull it outwards to separate it from the armrest frame. If the connection is tight, you can gently shake the cover to help it come off.

II. Snap-fit Fastening Method

  1. Find the snap gaps: Check along the joint between the armrest cover and the frame. The snaps are usually hidden in the gaps or interfaces and may require the use of a mobile phone flashlight for observation.
  2. Use a pry bar: Insert the tip of a plastic pry bar or a hard plastic card into the gap and gently pry from one end to disengage the first snap. Avoid using metal tools to prevent scratching the plastic surface.
  3. Separate gradually: Move the pry bar slowly along the gap and pry open the other snaps one by one, maintaining even force. If the snaps are tight, you can pry alternately on both sides.
  4. Remove the component: After all the snaps are disengaged, lift the armrest cover vertically upwards and avoid applying sideways force to prevent breakage.

III. Special Screw-free Fastening Methods

  1. Snap-fit type: Lay the chair on its side and observe the elastic snaps at the bottom or sides of the armrest. Insert a pry bar into the gap between the snap and the chair seat frame, gently pry and lift the armrest upwards.
  2. Pin-type: Check for small round holes or pin heads on the inner side of the armrest or the side of the chair seat. Use needle-nose pliers or a punch to align with one end of the pin, gently tap or clamp and pull it outwards (threaded pins need to be rotated and pulled out).
  3. Press-type: Look for hidden buttons or pressing mechanisms on the front underside or inner side of the armrest. Press the release button with one hand and lift the armrest vertically upwards with the other hand.

Precautions

  1. Before disassembly, place the chair on a flat surface, ensure that the five-claw base is stable, and hold the chair back if necessary to prevent tipping.
  2. Observe whether there are hidden plastic covers at the connections to avoid damaging the fasteners by applying force blindly.
  3. When disassembling adjustable armrests, first find the plug at the lower part of the armrest and turn the screw hole at the bottom to reduce the resistance of the drawstring.
  4. If the base plug is difficult to disassemble, you can apply engine oil or cleaner, shake it, and then try to disassemble it.

Tips and Suggestions

  1. When reinstalling the armrests, you can apply petroleum jelly or lubricating oil in the corners to increase flexibility and extend the service life.
  2. Pay attention to the position of sensors (such as in chairs with massage functions) during disassembly to avoid damage or loss.
