Office Chair Armrest Removal

Admin October 09, 2026

The removal of an office chair's armrests requires step-by-step operation, with core steps including reversing the chair, loosening the fixing screws, handling special connection structures, and retaining parts. The specific methods are as follows:

  1. Preparation and Positioning
    Place the office chair steadily upside down on a flat surface, ensuring that the chair legs are facing upwards and the seat is stable. This prevents parts from falling off or the surface from being scratched due to shaking during the disassembly process. This step provides a clear operational perspective, facilitating the location of the connection between the armrests and the seat.

  2. Loosening the Fixing Screws
    Observe the connection between the armrests and the seat. Most office chairs are fixed with hex socket screws, which require the use of a hex socket screwdriver of the corresponding size. Rotate the screwdriver counterclockwise to gradually loosen all visible fixing screws. If the screws are difficult to loosen due to rust or long-term tightening, try spraying a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) on the threads and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before operating. If it still doesn't work, check whether the wrong tool is being used (e.g., the screwdriver size doesn't match) or contact the manufacturer to confirm whether it is a specially designed screw.

  3. Handling Special Connection Structures
    For some office chairs, the armrests are tightly connected to the gas lift (adjustable rod) or the seat, and the base needs to be separated first before removing the armrests:

    • Raise the gas lift to its highest position to increase the operating space;
    • Hold the seat cushion firmly with one hand and press the lift lever of the gas lift with the other hand while gently shaking the seat to separate the base from the seat using the principle of leverage;
    • After separation, re-locate the screws at the connection of the armrests and continue the disassembly according to Step 2.
  4. Retaining Parts and Re-inspection
    During the disassembly process, remove small parts such as screws, washers, or clips one by one and store them in containers by category to avoid loss. After completing the disassembly, check whether there are any remaining screws or damaged parts at the connection between the armrests and the seat. If thread stripping or breakage of connecting parts is found, record the model number for replacement.

Precautions:

  • The structures of different models of office chairs vary greatly (e.g., plastic clip connections, hidden screws, etc.). If the above steps still cannot achieve disassembly, it is recommended to consult the product manual or contact the manufacturer for special disassembly instructions.
  • Avoid using excessive force during operation to prevent damage to the seat surface or the plastic parts of the armrests.
  • If reassembly is required after disassembly, operate in the reverse order and ensure that all screws are tightened to an appropriate torque (usually indicated by the inability to rotate the screwdriver by hand).
