Oxidation of Office Chair Armrests

Admin October 13, 2026

The cleaning and maintenance methods for oxidized office chair armrests should be selected based on the material, with common materials being stainless steel and copper. The specific treatment methods are as follows:

Oxidation Treatment for Stainless Steel Armrests
The common causes of blackening due to oxidation on stainless steel armrests include surface oxidation (formation of a black oxide film due to the oxidation of chromium elements after contact with air or moisture, more likely to occur in humid environments), stain accumulation (long-term attachment of sweat, oil, and dust to the metal leading to discoloration), and chemical corrosion (damage to the protective layer by contact with strong acid/alkaline cleaners or salt).
Cleaning methods:

  1. Baking Soda + White Vinegar Method: Mix 50g of baking soda with 100ml of white vinegar in a 1:2 ratio to form a paste (add a small amount of warm water for stubborn stains). Dip a soft cloth into the paste and apply it evenly to the blackened area. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then gently scrub in a circular motion. Avoid using steel wool or other hard objects that may scratch the surface. Finally, rinse with water and immediately dry with a cloth.
  2. White Vinegar Cleaning Method: Mix white vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio. Dip a wet cloth into the mixture and vigorously scrub the oxide film until it is removed.
  3. Professional Cleaner: When using a stainless steel cleaner, wear gloves. Pour an appropriate amount of the cleaner onto a damp cloth and thoroughly scrub the oxide film area, then rinse with water.
Daily maintenance: Clean weekly with a neutral detergent and warm water to prevent dirt buildup. In humid environments (such as bathrooms), dry immediately after use or apply stainless steel maintenance oil (such as WD-40). Avoid contact with chlorine-containing products such as 84 disinfectant and toilet cleaner. If the blackened area is too large or accompanied by rust spots, it may indicate substandard material (such as 201 stainless steel), and you should contact the manufacturer to replace it with 304/316 grade stainless steel.

Oxidation Treatment for Copper Armrests
Oxidation of copper armrests can be divided into two situations: surface blackening and the formation of copper rust. Surface blackening alone is mostly an oxide film without copper green, indicating mild oxidation; if green copper rust forms on the surface, the oxidation is more severe.
Cleaning methods:

  1. Surface Blackening: Prepare a cleaning solution using mild ingredients (such as lemon juice or white vinegar). Dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe the blackened area. Immediately rinse off any residual liquid with water after cleaning, then thoroughly dry with a cloth. This method is only suitable for pure copper parts without electroplated protective layers, as electroplated copper parts are prone to corrosion.
  2. Copper Rust Cleaning: Select a specialized cleaning agent for copper products. Before use, test the effect in a concealed location to ensure no damage occurs before proceeding. After cleaning, wipe briefly and immediately rinse and dry to prevent the cleaning agent from remaining for an extended period.
Daily maintenance: For copper products with a protective coating, if the coating is intact, simply wipe the surface dust with a soft cloth and a neutral cleaner. If the coating is damaged, oxidation will still occur rapidly after cleaning, and protective treatment needs to be redone. For copper parts without a coating, apply a thin layer of protective wax to isolate moisture and slow down oxidation, while avoiding prolonged contact with substances such as vinegar and salt.
